Cool, eclectic, embroidered bohemian chic…

Those five words best describe this upscale boutique with locations in Palm Springs and Palm Desert.  And let’s just say that caftans are back and kimonos are on the rise in a big way.  I’m seeing them everywhere.  Okay; only at the vintage markets and a handful of boutiques around here.  They seem to suit the laid back by-the-pool resort style with mimosa in hand don’t you think?  If only…

KARL LAGERFELD – a fashion phenomenon is dead

“I would like to be a one-man multinational fashion phenomenon,” he once said.

Karl Lagerfeld, the most prolific designer of the 20th and 21st centuries and a man whose career formed the prototype of the modern luxury fashion industry, died on Tuesday in Paris.

He was extraordinary.  We would expect nothing less from a man who once said: “When I was four I asked my mother for a valet for my birthday.”

Vanessa Friedman for The New York Times wrote:

Though his birth year was a matter of some dispute, Mr. Lagerfeld, who lived in Paris, was generally thought to be 85. His death was announced by Chanel, with which he had long been associated.

“More than anyone I know, he represents the soul of fashion: restless, forward-looking and voraciously attentive to our changing culture,” Anna Wintour, editor of American Vogue, said of Mr. Lagerfeld when presenting him with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards in 2015.

Creative director of Chanel since 1983 and Fendi since 1965, and founder of his own line, Mr. Lagerfeld was the definition of a fashion polyglot, able to speak the language of many different brands at the same time (not to mention many languages themselves: He read in English, French, German and Italian).

In his 80s, when most of his peers were retiring to their yachts or country estates, he was designing an average of 14 new collections a year, ranging from couture to the high street — and not counting collaborations and special projects. “Ideas come to you when you work,” he said backstage before a Fendi show at age 83.

His signature combinations of “high fashion and high camp” attracted admirers like Rihanna; Princess Caroline of Monaco; Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund; and Julianne Moore.

Mr. Lagerfeld was also a photographer, whose work was exhibited at the Pinacothèque de Paris; a publisher, having founded his own imprint for Steidl, Edition 7L; and the author of a popular 2002 diet book, “The Karl Lagerfeld Diet,” about how he had lost 92 pounds.

His greatest calling, however, was as the orchestrator of his own myth.

A self-identified “caricature,” with his dark glasses, powdered ponytail, black jeans, fingerless gloves, starched collars, Chrome Hearts jewelry and obsessive Diet Coke consumption, he achieved such a level of global fame — and controversy — that a $200 Karl Barbie doll, created in collaboration with the toymaker Mattel, sold out in less than an hour in 2014.

He was variously referred to as a “genius,” the “kaiser” and “overrated.” His contribution to fashion was not in creating a new silhouette, as designers like Cristobal Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Coco Chanel herself did.  Rather, he created a new kind of designer: the shape-shifter.

That is to say, he was the creative force who lands at the top of a heritage brand and reinvents it by identifying its sartorial semiology and then pulls it into the present with a healthy dose of disrespect and a dollop of pop culture.

Not that he put it that way exactly. What he said was: “Chanel is an institution, and you have to treat an institution like a whore — and then you get something out of her.”

“I don’t want to be real in other people’s lives. I want to be an apparition.”

It’s a Garbe Luxe Life

In a perfect world I would live only in Garbe Luxe

But life is never perfect…although it’s getting there because I’ve recently added a few more GL pieces to my wardrobe.  And I must say it’s not only because Natalia, the designer behind the brand is a good friend of mine. She is the best advertisement though…with or without even realizing it.

On a recent visit to Palm Springs we put on an impromptu mini fashion show in a hotel room with another friend and my sister.  And because the product is so well made (in Los Angeles no less; a rarity), and the fit is just right along with comfy quality fabric it’s a no-brainer…we of course wanted it all…even stuff that wasn’t for sale (like from Nat’s own wardrobe from last season) and a few items still in progress.  Didn’t matter – we still wanted it.

There’s always been a fine line to what is popularly coined “athleisure” as to whether you can wear it to places other than to and from the gym or running errands. But with this brand I would wear it for casual day wear any time.  It’s the missing link.  The replacement for jeans + a t-shirt for daytime for walking the dogs, meeting a friend for lunch, shopping, dropping kids to school (providing you have kids), here and there….also for the gym.  Some images from the Holiday Lookbook:

Summer style: Sac du marché

Off to the Market…or not.

Perhaps the beach instead, or an overnight stay with a friend.  In any case the oversize straw bag is an essential to have in your collection.

I think you need at least one good market bag even if you don’t plan to go to the market.

I’ve always loved the original plain French straw tote with leather handle.  Roomy enough for carrying groceries and fresh flowers.  They always seem to have some in stock at L’Occitane.

Although the colorful and embellished bags are nice too.

So many choices.  Not enough room to store them all.  They all scream SUMMER IS HERE.

Style: Kate Spade

Eight days ago the fashion world mourned the loss of style icon Kate Spade.

Kate Spade

I still covet my roomy, elegant Kate Spade cowhide black bag and my tortoiseshell reading glasses.  What makes my bag standout is what’s on the inside – the lining has all red + pink polka dots.  It makes me smile and it’s the real reason why I bought it.  Because there are, let’s face it, so many black leather bags on the market.

And it was always the fun little touches that set her bags apart from the rest.  Not only polka dots, but butterflies, bows, strawberries and the like.

Kate Spade was an original and when she sold her company her handbags still had the recognizable KS touch that made them stand out .  You have to wonder why anyone who put so much thought into creating fun, whimsical designs would choose to take her own life leaving a young daughter behind.

There’s still so much we don’t know about deep depression.  There are so many layers beneath the surface.  Just because someone looks a certain way on the outside doesn’t mean they’re not suffering on the inside.  How very sad that we seem to be hearing about people taking their own life more regularly.  We hear about the famous people, not the countless others who also suffer from this crippling disease. With the right help suicide is preventable.

If you, or someone you know suffers from depression please Google the centre for disease control to find the contract in your city .

Kate Spade’s Sparkle will live on in her eponymous brand.

Trending now: Cotton Candy Clothing

Not only for little girls. Women are wearing pretty pastels on trend for Spring + Summer. They’re soft and feminine.  They look like…

violet #michaelkors pink #tomford pistachio #siesmarjan lemon sorbet #hermes

But that doesn’t mean giving up on brights and neutrals.  Of course not.  You can make room for a pleasing little pastel hit here and there and not feel like you’re going to an Easter parade.  Personally lilac is my favorite with soft yellow a close second.

But for ice cream in general I love a good pistachio.

If you want to just play try a pastel eyeshadow for starters.  Puts the fun in fashion.

Goes well with a tan.

What’s your favorite pastel?

Style: California Cool

Inside a stylish box featuring California-founded brands.

It’s always special to receive a seasonal box filled with a carefully curated selection of luxury fashion and beauty products by Rachel Zoe, the fashion force behind the box of style. This California edition was delivered to me recently and I love it all.  It’s what’s inside that counts.

RACHEL ZOE COLLECTION PALM PRINT DUSTER EXCLUSIVE

According to Rachel nothing epitomizes California glamour like an effortless duster in a playful print. It’s the ultimate ode to West Coast cool.  As I’ve discovered, it can be worn a multitude of ways; to the beach, belted over a slipdress or as shown in above photo.

BONNIE CLYDE THE HILL SUNGLASSES EXCLUSIVE shown with KOPARI
COCONUT ROSE TONER which by the way smells heavenly.

These playful sunnies are a little bit Audrey Hepburn and a little bit Twiggy.  They suit a variety of face shapes.  I have lots of sunglasses but these round out (ha,ha) my collection.

Kopari Lip Lovers coconut oil and shea butter lip balm (not shown).  Love this super hydrating balm which goes on silky but not sticky. Truly one of the best I’ve tried to date.

LILI CLASPE ROPE THE MOON LARIAT EXCLUSIVE
This simple-yet-stunning lariat was designed exclusively as the ideal finishing touch which can compliment anyone’s style.  Came in gold but they have silver too.
JEN ATKIN X CHLOE + ISABEL
HEADWRAP & CHOKER.

A little glitter goes a long way especially to dress up your tresses.  This one is designed by Rachel’s friend and hair genius Jen Atkin. It also works well around the neck as a choker or on the wrist.

Style: Hubert de Givenchy

His are the only clothes in which I am myself,” Hepburn once said of Givenchy,

Givenchy designed outfits for many of Hepburn’s films, like this strapless, floral gown in 1954’s “Sabrina.”

according to Vogue. “He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality.”

Audrey Hepburn, as the designer’s muse, accompanied him in inventing a style that would redefine standards of beauty.

The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy  at the age of 91 (February 21, 1927 – March 10, 2018), a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century.  He will be greatly missed.

MAISON

THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

Hubert de Givenchy founded his namesake fashion house in 1952. No sooner did it open than it earned a reputation for breaking with fashion codes of its time. After an incredibly successful 40 years career he would be succeeded by some of fashion’s great talents that contributed to the house of Givenchy ongoing story.

Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy founded his namesake House in 1952. That same year, he presented a collection that would leave an indelible mark on fashion history: his “separates” – elegant blouses and light skirts blending architectural lines and simplicity – met with enormous success in light of the more constricted looks of the day.

He also dressed the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Grace Kelly and many other famous and non-famous women.  The most memorable fashion moment maybe:  Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress, in the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

The NY Times referred to him as the Fashion Pillar of Romantic Elegance.

Enough Said!

Style: Cowboy Hats

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys —Willie Nelson

Jane Fonda pulls off the cowgirl look as only she can – with natural style & grace.

How about cowgirls?

If you don’t reside in places like Tennessee or Texas, you seldom see cowboy hats worn except as a fashion statement.  But they’re back!  As a fashion statement or otherwise.

Cowboy boots are among the top spring/summer 2018 shoe trends, but to fully embrace your cowgirl spirit, you definitely also need a cowboy hat. I’ve been anxiously waiting for this Western style to reappear on the scene.  That’s why I didn’t let go of a few pairs of cowboy boots that sat dormant at the back of my closet.  And maybe that’s why I recently bought another pair of cute cowboy inspired ankle books.

Madonna has worn many hats — both literally and figuratively.

Style: SLIPing

The Slip Dress – a Style Staple

I’ve come to the realization that a simple slip dress is anything but basic. It should be a wardrobe staple in every womans closet.  Preferably in black.

If you’re ever in doubt of what to wear for an evening out it’s an easy, effortless piece to dress up or down.  Wear it long or just below the knee.  It pairs with so many things.  You can wear it with heels or flats, with a tuxedo jacket, throw or regular jean jacket.  Get the picture? And yes; Liz wore it better than anyone.

This might even be a real slip – so beautiful!
