beauty – Divine Skincare

I’m very pleased to announce the launch of my new skincare lineSkin so Divine.skinsodivine - Copy - Copymakeup1It’s been in the works for many months being tested and approved by people of all ages with all sorts of different complexions and skin types.  I wanted to make sure it was fit for sale before announcing it on my blog.  It’s been meticulously but lovingly formulated and re-formulated to finally acquire the perfection it has now become. Yes, I’m aware of the multitude of products out there and have probably tried hundreds of them myself.  From Crème De La Mer to Dr. Hauschka,  you name it!  There are many good ones on the market.

What makes these any better?  It’s my personal choice to want to create something completely natural and effective from scratch using high quality ingredients that are proven to be beneficial. I’m pretty picky – that’s all.natural1

About Skin so Divine:

The ingredients used to create these four products were sourced from the world’s finest from my various travels. I’m always curious wherever I go to find out what local natural products women with beautiful skin are using.  For instance in Brazil I discovered (well apparently I wasn’t the first one) the benefits of Maracuja oil. Maracuja oil contains 72.6 % linoleic acid, which is an omega- 6 fatty acid. This data comes from just one source. This makes maracuja oil undoubtedly one of the best sources of linoleic acid on earth.  In Hawaii it was Kukui Nut Oil (This oil contains vitamins A, C, and E) and in Africa it was Pure Unrefined Organic Shea Butter which now many other skincare lines are incorporating into their product line but you have to make sure you get the right kind.  The face oil contains Baobab Oil from Africa. If you haven’t heard of it, the baobab is the most intriguing and probably the best known tree in Africa.  It is often referred to as the “upside-down” tree which can have a lifespan of up to 6,000 years.  Of course this doesn’t mean that if you use this oil you’ll live longer but the oil from this tree contains nearly equal amounts of saturated (33%), mono-unsaturated (36%) and poly-unsaturated (31%) fatty acids, and the essential linoleic acid is of special interest.

I found a great supplier for Camelia Oil which is made from the seeds of actual green tea and has outstanding moisture and emollient properties. It has been used for centuries for beautifying purposes by women in China and Japan. Geishas of Kyoto used to moisturize their skin and hair with this Camelia oil. Enough said! Samurai used to wipe their swords with the oil to protect it from rusting and corrosion, which is early evidence of its excellent antioxidant qualities. This is assurance that your face won’t rust.  I had to say this. It penetrates skin as fast as water, leaving it supple and hydrated. The oil contains mono-saturated essential fatty acids and very high in oleic acid (Omega 9 fatty acid). Camellia oil contains vitamins, A, B, and E and  Squalene, which is a natural component of human sebum. With age the deficiency of squalene results in dry skin, premature aging and wrinkles. So applying just a few drops of camellia seed oil replenishes this deficiency, protecting, nourishing and moisturizing skin.

Some of the other exotic oils used are Rosehip Seed, Sea Buckthorn and good old Coconut.  Some old standbys like Avocado, Jojoba and Apricot Kernel even out the line.

Many of these oils you have already heard of, now that they’ve gone mainstream but that doesn’t make them any less effective.  Some are easy to buy (like Lavender) and others are more difficult (like good carrot seed oil) and quite expensive (like Frankincense).  Some smell incredible (like Jasmine).  I enjoy the whole process.  I’m not looking to change the marketplace, just want to find my niche within the market and hope other women, like me will appreciate something simple, straightforward but rich in quality.skinsodivine - Copy - Copy (2)

What makes these products unique:

The Divine Makeup Remover is not only 100% natural but it will remove all your makeup (even waterproof mascara) gently, quickly and efficiently.  It’s a complete makeup remover to be used all over your face including eye area.

The Divine Facial Mist is beautifully hydrating, uplifting and smells heavenly.  It doubles as a toner (which you can use to remove any extra makeup remover if you feel like it).

The Divine Facial Oil is just that!  Use it alone at night after cleaning & spraying your face or in conjunction with your daytime moisturizer with SPF.  I like to mix a little with my daytime tinted moisturizer that has SPF.

The Divine Balm is the closest thing to a miracle product that I’ve come across so far (even if I dare say so myself). It completely melts into the skin around your eyes, lips and cuticles.  I even put it on my eyelashes before bedtime and sometimes during the day instead of mascara (just use your eyelash curler right after).

The products, even though completely natural do not have to be kept in your fridge.  Just try to keep them away from direct heat or sunlight.  A cooler dark place (like your bathroom cabinet or in the bedroom) is best.  For the time being they are being sold exclusively online.

And remember, you can be allergic to anything in any product, natural or otherwise.  Look at the ingredient listing to make sure.

beauty: J’aime JOUER

Meet JOUER Luminizing Moisture Tint

Jouer or to play in French is the playful name of a beauty line created by beautiful and busy mother of two, Christina Zilber.luminizing-moisture-tint_0_2

I sampled the Jouer golden & pearl tinted moisturizers recently and loved the texture and sheer hint of colour.  Infact, these are more hydrating than the one I previously used from Laura Mercier which is surprising since so many people swear by Laura Mercier.

JOUER has formulas filled with serious skincare ingredients like Ginseng and Gingko Biloba Leaf Extract.  Christina likes to say it is “beauty with skincare included.”  And as a busy mother of two, she wanted her products to do double duty.  And I think many people are looking for this effortless approach to beauty while still maintaining consistency.christina2PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

beauty: Best in BALM

SUPER SEVEN!  Exotic, Organic beauty.  Paraben + Cruelty Free.   It’s called Divine Balm by SkinsoDivine.

balm3

Why?  Because it’s a special 3 in 1 *balm which contains seven superstar ingredients rich in moisture and vitamins to help smooth and soften the skin on your eyes, lips and cuticles.  A divine selection even if I say so myself.

Why should I say so myself?  Hmmm…seems like forever that I’ve been trying to formulate what I believe to be the most effective of all balms.  The balm of balms. I’ve tried out so many different concoctions to get it right. And of course at first I had to get some extremely picky friends (but then again most of my friends are unbelievably picky) to try it out and give me their totally honest feedback.  I’m very happy with the results.  There are three other products in the line all made with 100% nourishing natural oils for all skin types, even those who suffer from rosacea.  Having said that, I will be the first to admit that anyone can have an allergic reaction to any single ingredient so it’s best to read what is in each product first.  I have sensitive skin and it works for me.

Yes, these are my products but I wasn’t even going to tell anyone that I formulated them myself because I don’t want to appear like I’m pushing my own line.  But it seems that many bloggers are doing exactly that.  They either have something of their own to sell or they promote other people’s products.  And while I’m comfortable talking about and helping to promote other products and things I believe in then why shouldn’t I talk about my own? I guess because I’m a bit uncomfortable with doing so and it doesn’t come naturally.  But I’ve also been researching and sourcing the best oils from all over the world (for the individual products) so all I can say is that if you are at all interested in checking out the Skin so Divine product line please do so at the link below.  If you feel like purchasing anything (or the complete line) and decide you don’t like it or it’s not working for you within 30 days then send it back and I will refund your money.  Guaranteed. Whew!  That wasn’t so hard after all.  Here’s what is in it:

1) Soybean Oil – one of the major benefits of soy oil is that it’s a very good oil for protecting skin from UV rays. Soy oil helps to cure skin damage and gives it a healthy glow.  It is a rich source of linoleic acid, which is a type of omega-6 fatty acid. It contains B vitamins along with Vitamin E and Vitamin K. In addition the Vitamin E in soybean oil keeps the skin smooth and healthy.

2) Jojoba Oil (native to southern Arizona, southern California, and northwestern Mexico) – One big bonus is that it contains almost all of the vitamins and minerals essential for healthy skin: vitamin E, B-complex, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine, and chromium. And it’s even gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin without causing allergic reactions.

3) Rosehip Seed Oil (Chile) – is high in linoleic acids, vitamin C and Vitamin A (retinol). It will help to regenerate tissue and eliminate wrinkles, fine lines & sun damage. It actually deserves a whole post of its own (coming up I promise).  A little gossip…it wasn’t until former Victoria’s Secret Angel Miranda Kerr name dropped it as the secret to her radiant complexion that we decided to further explore this oil.

4) Carrot Seed Oil (obtained from wild carrots which are usually found in Europe) – is high in antioxidants and will help protect your skin from environmental assaults like UV rays & pollution.  It has an amazing ability to rejuvenate the skin and stimulate cell growth and repair damaged skin. While it can’t turn back time, it can help you look younger and more radiant.

5) Kukui Nut Oil (Hawaii) – is fortified with essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, C, E and antioxidants.  Also rich in Linoleic  acid – an omega fatty acid that your skin will devour. Kukui nut oil also works well as an under eye treatment for the prevention and softening of crow’s feet.

6) Sea buckthorn Oil (Tibet)  is loaded with antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, and studies show that these two nutrient powerhouses can prevent wrinkles. Of the essential omega fatty acids found in Sea Buckthorn, one of the main moisturizing essential fatty acids is Omega 7 palmitoleic acid. Palmitoleic Acid (Omega-7) is a natural component of skin. It is considered a valuable topical agent in treating burns and healing wounds.

7) Shea Butter (Africa) –  is very rich in fatty acids as well as Vitamins A and E. Applied on the skin, it intensely hydrates and soothes the skin as well as helping to restore the natural skin barrier.  Good to prevent black under eye circles.

*A balm has a different consistency than a cream or lotion, it’s more of a thicker ointment that glides on easily and sinks right in.

Do you use an eye or lip balm?  If so, what do you recommend?

Beauty biz – a visit to Kiehl’s

20141022_110623

Kiehl’s on Robson St., Vancouver draws inspiration from Kiehl’s New York east village roots as an old–world neighborhood apothecary developed by innovative pharmacists and herbologists.
Kiehl’s has an unorthodox marketing approach, exceptionally large male clientele base (they have a section dedicated to men) and its products’ simple and straightforward packaging.20141022_110630

I remember visiting the original location in New York (they have a Norman Rockwell Holiday Window) where I bought my first bottle of ultra-facial moisturizer and recently on Robson I sampled the new multi-corrective cream. L O V E at first sample!20141022_110707

There’s something else I like about Kiehl’s besides their skincare products:

In 2010, Kiehl’s introduced the Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR, an annual, week-long motorcycle ride through major U.S. cities that includes multiple high-profile events at Kiehl’s stores along the way to raise consumer and media awareness about amfAR and the fight against AIDS. In the last four years, LifeRide has raised over $400,000 for 20141022_110609amfAR.

Super Multi-Corrective Cream Key Ingredients:

Jasmonic Acid

Inspired by “signal molecules” secreted by plants that begins a self-repair process – corrects wrinkles and fine lines, loss of suppleness and elasticity.                                                                                                                                                                                            Beech Tree Extract

Sugar extracted from Beech Tree which helps improve skins overall firmness.

Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid

A power booster, discovered to enhance Jasmonic Acid’s efficacy, super charging the improvement in skin elasticity and smoothness.

beauty biz – THE quick FIX

How does a girl-on-the-go get a Glamorous Glow?  I will tell you….20141015_114712

GLAMGLOW was originally designed for exclusive professional backstage use in Hollywood. In 2011, GLAMGLOW became available to consumers worldwide and is now known for fast-acting and innovative mud treatments with patent-pending formulas and high-end technology to deliver instant, visible results.

20141015_114810

I tried GLAMGLOW BRIGHTMUD EYE treatment which is a 3 minute instant eye treatment and found it very refreshing as well as hydrating and softening. It claims to minimize puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines while brightening and hydrating the eyes.  It worked but I can’t tell you how long exactly it lasted.

It’s the world’s first tap-on-wipe-off eye product designed to work for Hollywood actors in just a few minutes, just before going in front of a camera on-set.  So it would work for just before going on a date then??

The package contains 12 ChromeCells and each one provides a single treatment for both eyes.20141015_114719

Aside from the claims and everything else, the packaging will certainly get your attention.

Available at Sephora.  Price: approx $76 CDN

Beauty biz – the Facial

For many years Optaderm has been my go-to place for facials.

Products that work in simple packaging.
Products that work in plain packaging.

Okay there was a period of time where I tried other skincare specialists.  They lured me in off the street with their luxurious looking salons and some of their facials were very good but I’ve never been as satisfied as when Elizabeth attends to my skin at Optaderm.  She takes care of business. Hopefully she’ll be there as long as I continue going.

Optaderm will not lure you off the street.  In fact they’re located on the 3rd floor of a medical building.  You have to know about them.  The place is very pristine but not at all fancy.  Just the basics.  If you’re looking for fancy shmancy you must go elsewhere.20141010_170854

During the course of the complete one hour facial, we receive a relaxing aromatherapy massage, thorough deep pore cleansing, skin-smoothing peeling and calming facial masque.  And I always ask for *extractions (most other places will not do this maybe out of fear of messing up). They are not the most pleasant part of the facial but there always seems to be some to get rid of.

skincare line which you can use after the facial if you choose to
skincare line which you can use after the facial if you choose to

Optaderm also sells their own brand of skincare & some makeup (made at their in-house lab) with healthy ingredients like plant extracts, amino acids and vitamins.  They’ll probably give you a few generous size samples to try.  They’re able to sell their goods at a lower price point than  competitors by being a direct supplier to the customer.  You won’t be disappointed.

Optaderm, since 1987 has offered high quality products and one-on-one skin care advice.

*Extractions – meaning tiny (sometimes not so tiny) black & whitehead removal.  That’s all you need to know.

secret2ITALY

For many generations, Italian women have been flaunting beautiful, glossy hair thanks to a nourishing yogurt and olive oil recipe.

Try now: Mix one cup of plain whole-milk yogurt with one teaspoon of olive oil. After shampooing, comb in the mixture and let sit for five minutes. Rinse the mask out with cool water.

secret1EGYPT

Since the days of Cleopatra, women have been bathing in milk for soft, rejuvenated skin.

Try Now: Add 3 cups of powdered milk to a warm bath to remove dead cells and soften skin. You’ll instantly notice your skin becoming smoother and softer.

secret3MEXICO

Known for their smooth complexions, women in Mexico have long been exfoliating with avocado.

Try now: Make your own face scrub by drying out a clean avocado seed in the sun for one week. Cut into 4 pieces and drop into a blender to grind into a chunky powder. Mix the remnants of the seed with a daily moisturizer and massage into skin while in a steamy shower.

secret4GREECE

According to lore, Grecian gods bathed in rosemary water to purify and thicken hair.

Try now: Boil fresh rosemary in two quarts of water and let cool before pouring over clean hair. This cleanses any buildup on the scalp and stimulates follicles to spark hair growth.

secret5CHINA

Women in Southeast Asia have been using a traditional tamarind skin peel to remove sunspots and acne scars for ages.

Try now: Remove the pulp from three fresh tamarind pods and mix with honey and water until the consistency becomes creamy. Massage onto skin and let sit for five minutes before washing off. Repeat weekly for lasting results.

secret6DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Women have been using garlic to strengthen their nails for centuries.

Try now: Finely chop half of a fresh garlic and add to a bottle of clear nail polish. Let sit for 10 days before applying to nails. The strengthening and antibacterial properties in the garlic make your nails stronger—but not without a bit of a stench.
