Recently and straight from the source – oil that is! Moroccan Argan Oil from the Atlas Mountains. On a camel no less…
and took a Selfie to prove it
In recent years, an incredible oil from Morocco called Argan oil (Argania spinosa) has become such a hot commodity that a New York Times editorial termed it “liquid gold.”
“I love gold and I definitely love a beauty product with multiple purposes.”
Most women are familiar with the hot selling Moroccanoil haircare products that pioneered a new category in the beauty industry. You can hardly walk by a hair salon that doesn’t sell it. The products are infused with nourishing antioxidant-rich argan oil. Moroccanoil has grown into an iconic beauty brand in less than a decade.
I do not know what amount of argan oil is inside each of their products, but Argan Oil (extracted from the nuts of the fruits of the Argan tree) in general is an all around multi-use product with curative properties revered for centuries in Morocco, the only place where the Argan tree is naturally found . In the southern regions of the country, pure Argan oil is celebrated for everything from soothing skin redness to curing rheumatism and more.
Women preparing the Oil
You can use it on your skin, you hair, your nails and even cook with it (using a different variant of the oil my sister has informed me). See below.
I’ve been sourcing out healing oils from all over the world for the face oil used in my own skincare line. Many of which I’ve researched and found from my very own travels – for “Skin so Divine” and Argan was included in the mix. Before this I bought the Josie Maran Argan Oil at Sephora because it was the only one I could readily find that admits to being 100% pure. But at $60 for 1.7 oz/50 mL it can get quite costly. And that’s only for one oil. It’s the rarity of this Moroccan oil that makes it more expensive than most others.
Nuts from the fruit of the Argan Tree
For face it’s rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids to deeply hydrate and nourish skin.
Traditional Uses of Morocco’s Golden Oil
Traditionally, Argan oil has been used topically to:
Protect against and heal skin infections
• Clear up acne
• Ease eczema
• Hasten recovery from chicken pox
• Heal cracks and burns
One of the Rarest and Most Unique Oils in the World
The Argan tree is known throughout the Berber state in Morocco as the “Tree of Life.” Pure Argan oil is made from the kernels of the nuts from argan trees.
Atlas MountainsThe Tree
Today, Argan trees grow exclusively in the semi-desert soil of the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve. Due to this small and specific growing area, the trees are protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)—and pure Argan oil is one of the rarest in the world.
The pure Argan oil industry is almost as unique as the oil itself. All Argan sold today comes from cooperatives operated by Moroccan women (see bottom for more info.), and the cooperatives share profits among the local women of the Berber tribe. The money goes toward health care and education, as well as other good works. For example, Argan oil profits established an ecosystem reforestation project so that Argan can be sourced conscientiously and the supply will not run out.
Even more incredible is that revenues from pure Argan oil sales are reported to feed 10% of the Moroccan population.
Wonderful for Skin, Hair, and Nails…and the World
“Recent scientific studies have shown that the benefits of Argan oil has antimicrobial properties, and can be used in treating damaged skin and inflammation,” said Majda Alaoui Sosso, director of one of Morocco’s oil cooperatives.
This is in part due to Argan oil’s rich stores of essential fatty acids, or EFAs, which support the health and beauty of skin and hair (while also, when taken internally, boosting heart and brain health and regulating hormone levels and other critical functions).
Pure Argan oil is easily absorbed, and it regulates the pH balance of the skin, which in turn protects against sun exposure and other damage. It also reduces skin inflammation and thus helps control and reverse skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis while also diminishing scars.
Pure Argan oil’s proven and observed benefits for hair, skin, and nails are extensive, and include, to name a few…
Dry Skin: Nourishes and moisturizes dry, scaly, flaky skin and protects against infection.
Oily Skin: Regulates sebum production to keep the skin’s natural oils at a healthy level. With regular use, the skin will no longer look or feel oily.
Irritated/Itchy Skin: Protects skin from allergens that may cause itchiness.
Acne: Controls overproduction of acne-causing sebum and soothes the inflammation brought about by acne; also prevents the ugly scars acne can leave behind.
Aging: Stimulates renewal of skin cells and boosts elasticity while smoothing wrinkles and lines.
Sun Damage Rich in antioxidants that protect cells from UV light.
Eczema and Psoriasis: Helps alleviate inflammatory symptoms associated with psoriasis. Also addresses immunity problems and allergies that trigger eczema symptoms.
Hair: Repairs damaged hair. Moisturizes instantly, and prevents split ends while restoring shine. Increases hair growth and helps control, cure, and prevent dry and itchy scalp.
Scalp: Keeps scalp healthy and well nourished. A few drops will protect against dandruff. Keeps the roots of the hair hydrated, protected, and well nourished.
Nails: Keeps nails strong and healthy and restores natural shine while easily resolving brittle nail problems.
I made up some little bottles of the pure oil to use on its own as well as combined it with the other essential oils which make up the Divine Facial Oil…which by the way, is simply divine.
Thank you LisaXOXOx 10(also for the authentic Moroccan Tagine which I love).

IN THE KNOW: the tree + production for Argan Oil:
Argan trees live for about 15-200 years and grow up to be nearly 30 meters in height. Around the 30 or 50 year mark, the trees start producing fruit. The trees yield fruit once a year and one tree will usually yield 1 liter of Argan Oil. One liter of oil takes 10 to 12 hours of manual work to make!
The production of 100% organic Argan Oil is a complex, labor intensive process. The Argan fruit is harvested and the peel and the pulp are discarded. What is left is a hard-shelled, oval nut which is cracked by hand. The emerging kernels are ground into a paste from which oil is cold pressed. The freshly extracted oil may be left to sit for 2 to 3 weeks after which clear oil is poured into dark bottles and exported around the world.
This harvesting and cold pressing is done by local women from the Berber tribe of Morocco who are organized into co-operatives. Fair-trade Argan Oil provides Berber women with a stable source of income, financial independence and better opportunities for education, health and personal development.
More than two million people rely on Argan trees for economic sustenance and the Argan Oil trade has reformed the entire region by providing access to a stable income.
Culinary Argan Oil
The culinary variant of the oil is produced by roasting the nuts first and then grinding them to a sticky paste where the oil comes out of. By roasting the oil gently, it will get a deep nutty aroma and flavor. The oil is very good for the heart and brains as it boasts a healthy rich array of omega-3 fatty acids and 3 times more vitamin E than olive oil. It is also amazing for digestion and can be sprinkled on salads, grilled fish & meat stews to get a delicious nutty flavor. I have some of this too. UPS: cooking oil varieties.

Glamorous products to help make you a better version of yourself
That’s what I think of Chanel beauty. It’s not that I believe because the logo says “Chanel” that they are necessarily better than anything else on the market….however I’m loving these two products that happen to be under the label “Chanel”. Aside from how nicely they apply, wearability and comfort let’s just admit that the packaging is pretty elegant. And sometimes that counts for a lot. Especially with something you tend to wear every day. And with the Chanel name you can expect nothing but the best.
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder SPF 15
Chanel Les Beiges Powder is a compact setting powder that is designed to give your complexion a sheer, healthy, glow without looking too bronzy or unnatural. Released in Fall 2013, it is part of Chanel’s permanent collection. It boasts SPF15++, though, as with any makeup product with sun protection claims, you would have to use an unreal amount of this product to achieve the amount of protection claimed. A bonus factor is that the half-moon brush that comes encased is made with all natural bristles and you can actually use it. I suggest choosing a slightly more intense shade than your normal skin tone for a sun-kissed effect.
It’s available in 7 luminous shades: N°10, N°20, N°30, N°40, N°50, N°60, and N°70. Interestingly, the official Chanel website only offers six shades – N°10, N°20, N°25, N°30, N°40, and N°50. However, Nordstrom carries all 7 shades, as will most department store Chanel counters you visit in person.
Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo:
There’s a new lipstick formula from Chanel called Rouge Coco Stylo (stylo means pen in French and when you look at the photo you’ll see why this name is perfect) which comes in a slim twist-up tube that’s described as having “the intensity of a lipstick, the shine of a lip gloss and comfort of a lip balm.” It truly is a three-in-one kind of lipstick. The texture is great, the colour is beautiful and it is relatively long-wearing. I have #214 – Message which is a vibrant berry shade for Fall. It is sophisticated and above all, moisturizing which is very important to me right now.
I’m striving to get my Vitamin C any way possible especially during the colder months. Luckily I love apples. Green Apples have multiple beauty benefits aside from being good for one’s overall health as they also help keep your teeth and gums healthy. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to call it a natural beauty remedy.
If you’re a person focused on your beauty and skin health, then you’ll certainly reap the benefits of green apples. They contain vitamins A, B, C, as well as E. They also help keep your skin fresh and glowing.
And even though we’re lucky to see a ray of sunshine now, we should still be applying a moisturizer with SPF daily. At this time of the year I lower the amount to at least SPF 15. This is the lowest SPF you should consider. In my opinion anything less is a waste of time and anything higher than 30 (unless you ski) may not be necessary either.
So I was really pleased to receive a full size Green Apple Brightening moisturizer with SPF from natural beauty company, Juice Beauty. It was in my Spring Box of Style but I just only started using it.
I just received my Fall Box of Style which I’ll share with you next week….it’s amazing! As it so happens the brand’s new creative director of makeup is Gwyneth Paltrow. She should know a thing or two. Apparently she benchmarked every item against conventional versions (mostly prestige), pushing the company’s chemist, Mimi, to match their efficacies. “It can’t be that the makeup is organic and that’s why you should use it,” she says. “It has to be as good or better than anything else. That’s how you’re going to move the needle in a real way.”
So guess I’ll be trying some of the makeup next….
Have you tried any of their products? If so, which ones and how do you like them?
It’s almost like testing out shades of paint for your home. You want to find something that flatters and will last. Sephora wanted to test out their Rouge range of lipstick shades and finishes so they narrowed it down to four complimentary testers with great sounding names, which of course I was happy to try out by wearing one each day. If there is one makeup product I cannot be without it would have to be lipstick. I can do without any eye makeup (not saying it looks amazing but most often I do go without) but I feel like without wearing anything on my lips I just disappear. Do you feel the same about any makeup product?
Surprisingly enough these shades appear to be universally flattering, long-lasting, reasonably priced and above all…chic. I realized that these shades are all one really needs. Certainly if I were to narrow it down to only four these would be it. Here they are:
Belly-Dancing Rouge Cream
Belly-dancing R49
Nights in Rouge Satin: A hydrating lipstick that creates full lips with intense color. A revamp of the iconic Sephora Lip Attitude Chic, this new hydrating formula provides improved coverage and is rife with pigment. The creamy texture softly glazes your lips, imparting just the right amount of color and sheen. Perfection!
Love Spell Rouge Brilliance
Love Spell N14
Girl needs some Gloss – this one is a light pink semi sheer nourishing formula with a bit of gloss. It’s pretty and perfect for a hint of colour. Especially for sunny days.
Enchanting Blush Rouge Balm
Enchanting Blush 03
A beautiful everyday shade that is fresh & bright. It has a smooth hydrating formula with SPF 20.Sephora calls the formula a balmy lipstick with a gel formula which is about right.
Rebel Chic Rouge Mat
Rebel Chic M11
An ultra-matte lipstick that provides long-lasting moisture and intense pigment. This one delivers bold color, intense moisture, and incredible comfort. Enriched with shea butter and rich emollients, the formula moisturizes and soothes lips, while depositing super matte color and blurring lip imperfections. And unlike some matte lipsticks, this one never feels cakey or dry on your lips.
What else you need to know:
This product is not tested on animals.
Beauty Tip:
Create a contoured lip by selecting your shade of Lip Liner To Go and Rouge Cream Lipstick based on skintone and desired look. Use the Pro Lip brush to blend the lipstick and liner together to soften any harsh lines.
Aren’t orchids special? The exotic flowers certainly brighten up any room. And they make beautiful centerpieces….for a while.
So, why until now have I not had any orchids in my home?
Probably because they intimidated me a little bit. In a flowery kind of way. I thought they’d be a lot more difficult to look after and also there is a longish waiting period once the delicate flowers start to fall off until the next bloom. The time in between where you can’t be too sure if you’ve over or under watered them and if they’ll ever come back. They don’t look so pretty in the awkward stage with only long branches – and then you have to find a place to put them where they’ll be less noticeable.
My first orchid is when a friend brought one over as a hostess gift almost a year ago. I loved it. It lasted for what seemed like months…until it didn’t. Then I moved it around from window to window to make sure it was getting the right light but no matter what I did it was still looking sad and I was sure I killed it. That’s why you never see one that’s not in bloom in any florist shop. No one would buy them!
So I decided to hand it over to another friend who is known as a plant doctor. She managed to bring it back to life and then instructed me how to properly care for it. I left it with her until the time I guiltily took it back – once it was perfectly full of flowers. Now the proud owner of one very good looking orchid. It was going to be my one and only and I found the perfect spot to showcase it – in my bathroom window.
But this is all to say that since that time I’ve received two more orchid gifts.I think people come over and notice how great you look after your orchid and want to give you more. I didn’t have the heart to tell them “no, please no more orchids”. That sounds so insensitive but when all three plants lose their flowers I need to find two more places to hide them. I know; so ungrateful sounding.
However…..the latest one is in full bloom and the other two are starting up again and I really appreciate and love looking at them. I have one white and two purple plants.
Did you know?
Charles Darwin used orchids to help prove his theories of natural selection and evolution. Scientists today follow in Darwin’s footsteps and use orchids to learn more about how plants have evolved and adapted to live in almost every type of environment around the world.
The history surrounding the Orchid is as vast as the species range, with Charles Darwin even studying the cross-pollination that is used by this amazing plant; this, in turn, prompted a novel he wrote on the subject – Darwin’s Orchids.
Significance of Colour Variation (whether the gift giver meant it that way or not):
Orchids make magical arrangements and bouquets. While as a species of flower orchids hold a meaning of their own, each colour variation carries a slightly different meaning with it, making them ideal gifts and a beautiful surprise for your loved ones. These exotic and stunning flowers can convey a silent message, symbolising a special moment between you and your recipient – whether strength, beauty or love. The Ancient Greeks held the orchids in an extremely high regard and had specific meaning for the size and shape of these stunning flowers. The large orchid tubers were believed to ensure the birth of a boy, while the smaller represented the birth of a girl.
Orchids are available in every colour of the rainbow, excluding true blue. There is, however, a blue toned orchid – they are extremely rare, so they represent rarity, as well as spirituality and meditation.
Pink: The pink Orchid has the honour of representing innocence, femininity, grace, joy and happiness. It also represents the celebration of the 14th and 28th wedding anniversary.
**Purple: Purple flowers often represent royalty, respect, admiration and dignity and the same is true for purple orchids. These stunning blooms are ideal to show someone that you admire them and have respect for them.
Red: Red roses have come to universally represent passion and desire, and the meaning of this colour is no different when it comes to orchid symbolism. Perfect for Valentine’s Day! Red orchids are also symbolic of courage and strength.
*White: White orchids signify innocence, elegance and beauty – ideal for a christening or the birth of a baby. White also signifies reverence and humility.
Yellow: The sunny, bright colour of yellow orchids is synonymous with joy and new beginnings. This orchid colour is also the traditional symbol for friendship. Perfect for giving to a friend who has just succeeded with a joyous achievement.
Orange: The orange orchid represents pride, enthusiasm and boldness. Perfect for giving to someone who is just about to do something nerve-racking.
Green: Represents health, nature, life and longevity. This gorgeous coloured orchid is also thought to represent good fortune and happy blessings.
On another beauty note:
Radiant orchid is the ‘It’ flower in beauty products Orchids are trending in fragrances and products for skin, nails, lips, eyes and more.
Guerlain, the reputable French beauty company has had an orchid skincare line for as long as I can remember called Orchidée Impériale.
A rare flower that foils time – the orchid – a wonder of longevity, an incredible source of discoveries for science. Guerlain has been the expert in orchids and skin longevity for years: three orchids selected from 30,000 and a new one – the Gold Orchid – known to regenerate cell life.
Orchids also signify good luck
And on that note I will willingly accept orchid plants (or skincare) if anyone is so generous to gift me with more. Providing they’re aware that when they visit, should the orchid not be in plain sight it will be brought out again…and again…over time.
Because I’m sure even the cream doesn’t last forever. And the pure beauty will be not taken for granted! Especially since I now know how to properly care for them.
Yesterday I wrote about doing a wardrobe check – to clear out what is no longer useful and keep only what works to bring out our best selves for a more polished look. Now I want to talk about polishing up our complexions.
Products for all seasons and all reasons.
Change of season means using lighter products and doing a makeover check. First off…
I’m told that half of all women wear the wrong shoe size (can that be true, really?) and two thirds wear the wrong size bra (we know we’re really 34B but we’ll buy a 34D…wishful thinking?). And I don’t know exactly how many of us use the wrong facial products but I’m guessing the numbers are pretty high.
Do you know your skin type?
Maybe you think you do but chances are your skin type falls into more than one category. Even those of us with so-called “normal” complexions experience flare ups and we all have battles from time to time. Some more than others. Skin is a living organ and it mirrors what’s happening in our lives and in our bodies. It constantly changes – hormones one week, stress the next. Taking medication, a change in diet, smoking, drinking, not sleeping, all of it can effect our mood and in turn, our skin.
General classifications are normal, combination, oily, dry, sensitive.
Most people will experience combination skin at some point. The ‘T Zone’ around the nose, forehead and eyes is naturally a bit oilier than the rest of the skin on your face, so one way to find out what mood your skin is in is to clean this area with a light cleanser, followed by a good toner and then leave it for a couple of hours. The results may not be what you’re expecting.
If you find that the skin is very tight, it may be that you need to start using a richer formula for a while to deal with any excess dryness.
Sensitive skin usually benefits from something lighter, like a gel or serum, while skin prone to breakouts or redness may need special attention with regular masks designed to soothe and cleanse the pores.
Customized Skin Care
Then there are problem conditions like acne, rosacea or eczema which can really get in the way of you and your best self. They make you tend to want to hide from the world.
Did you know that you can help ease your problem situation and in some cases clear it up entirely by abiding by some dietary tips and some simple at-home remedies?
This according to skin care guru *Kate Somerville:
Dietary Tips for Treating Acne: be wary of dairy, white sugar, white flour and saturated fats. Milk contains steroid hormones and other compounds that can contribute to clogged pores, inflammation, and acne. Sugars boost insulin which can increase oil production and the growth of pore-clogging cells.
At-Home Remedies for Treating Acne: Find products with different active ingredients to target acne like sulfur, benzoyl peroxide, tea-tree oil and salicylic acid. it’s essential that products don’t strip or over dry the skin because it will over-compensate by producing excess oil.
Dietary Tips for Treating Rosacea: diet plays a large role in rosacea. Avoid trigger foods such as caffeine, white sugar, white flour, alcohol and spicy food. Eat food that encourages the growth of good bacteria like leafy greens, high-fiber foods and probiotics.
At-Home Remedies for Treating Rosacea: Look for products containing calming agents like mineral masks, aloe, lavender and green tea. For severe rosacea see your dermatologist, there are great topical antibiotics available.
Dietary Tips for Treating Eczema: If you’re having a severe eczema breakout, stop eating all dairy, wheat and sugar. Eat whole, unprocessed foods and stay away from acidic items like tomatoes and vinegar. Drinking lemon water will keep you hydrated and make your system more alkaline which is crucial when you’re battling eczema.
At-Home Remedies for Treating Eczema: bathing is better than showering when your skin is dry, because a shower can actually strip oils. Make sure the temperature isn’t too hot and avoid products with fragrance. Try adding goat’s milk or colloidal oatmeal to your bath and apply your lotion, oils or eczema cream as soon as you get out of the tub to seal in hydration.
*At the Kate Somerville “Skin Health Experts Clinic” they use blue and red LED light therapy which aids in treating and clearing up acne, eczema and rosacea.
The treatment is supposed to stimulate cell growth and has an anti-inflammatory effect, which heals and relieves pain. Have any of you tried it?
I guess the answer to perfect skin is to never eat sugar, dairy or fat and get at least 8 solid hours of sleep every night, don’t drink any alcohol and try not to stress. But hey; we’re only human.
What kind of skin type do you think you have? If you don’t mind sharing I’d like to know and also how you deal with any specific skin care problems.
Then we’ll head to the beach and get a head of beach bombshell hair
Or something like that
Because it’s freeing not to think about hair too much in the summer or try to create a casually toussled look like we’ve been to the beach, even if we haven’t.
For effortlessly chic, sexy undone hair that shouts “just got out of the ocean and my hair dried perfectly.”
And the best way to do that is with:
A product that will help do it for us. A product such as Quai Wave Spray. The one that all the women in the biz who matter use, so I’m told. Hey; I matter dammit!
So I am being sent some my way any day now. Because I love the way my hair dries naturally after having spent time in salt water. It’s the best!
Quai uses rice protein instead of salt in their spray. They say that the rice protein protects hair fibers from the inside against oxidative damage due to solar radiation and hair keratin from degradation.
I think it may work much better than the empty plastic spray bottle I filled up with ocean water thinking I could create my own natural hair product. It was ingenious by the way, just not perfect. It was too drying.
This feather light spray is formulated to give natural wave and body without any dryness or crunch.
What else you need to know:
Shake it up and spritz it on damp or dry hair from root to tip to activate natural waves, enhance texture, boost body, and give hair memory. Or, just mist the roots for extra volume. This product is scented with Ouai No. 2 Fragrance, containing notes of Italian lemon, amber, and white musk. No Parabens, No Animal Testing. Available at Sephora or visit their website: http://theouai.com/
*First five lines and the one below taken from the uplifting song Tomorrow from the Broadway musical “Annie”.
When I’m stuck with a day that’s grey and lonely I just stick up my chin and grin and say, the sun will come outeventually tomorrow. Sure I do! Then I know my hair will be better.
