beauty cabinet essential – Geisha Inc.

A product review – with love from Vancouver, B.C.

001 (2)I’ve always held a fascination for all things Geisha.  In fact, I followed a few when visiting Kyoto many years ago & it was pretty obvious. I love the ancient tradition (their skill in dancing, singing and playing musical instruments such as the flute and shamisen), their alluring beauty and gracefulness. The white skin, the elaborate jet black hair, red painted lips & glorious silk kimonos.  They look like porcelain dolls.  I loved the book ‘memoirs of a geisha’ (couldn’t put in down) and the movie too.  But the closest I’ll ever get to a geisha now is by wearing Geisha Inc. liquid eyeliner.  Not the same, but a little bit goes a long way.

Liquid eyeliner is not the easiest makeup product to work with for us non-geisha type girls.  If you don’t have a steady hand it can get real messy real quick or can look way over the top. But then I discovered (okay I didn’t really discover it but I did find) a great liquid liner that delivers nice pigment with ease of use.  To be honest, the packaging is what sold me at first but the product happily delivers.  Bonus – the company is based in Vancouver, B.C.

 What is it?

Geisha Ink Liquid Eyeliner is a 24 Hour water and smudge-proof formula that delivers effortless and precise application with its revolutionary microfiber brush tip. This quick-drying formula helps create subtle to dramatic looks.  It comes in brown or black.

How to?

Shake liner a few times before use. Apply with enclosed micro-fiber brush to ensure precise application. Close cap tightly after each usage. Removes easily with warm water and/or regular eye makeup remover. For best result, use a eye primer or powder eye area prior to application.

Personally speaking – it’s a Bazaar world!

Vogue, Elle, InStyle, W, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar and their various world counterparts give you the very best of the very latest stylish clothing & beauty trends. But if I had to choose only one magazine per month I would have to go with Harper‘s Bazaar.  Here are my list of reasons why:

We love the September Issues.
We love the September Issues.

When Harper’s Bazaar was launched as a weekly journal in 1867, it was the first version of the modern fashion magazine in America and possibly the world.

Bazaar’s assemblage of photographers, artists, designers and writers deliver a “sophisticated” perspective into the world of fashion, beauty and popular culture bar none!  The photography is unparalleled.

The incomparable DianaVreeland (the eye has to travel) was the editor from 1936 – 1962 among other notables like Carmel Snow.

The “style at every age” pages are for those ranging from their 20’s to 70’s+ (a wider appeal than most other magazines).

Stories are kept short and to the point & I’m attracted to the COVERS.

I just had to show you the difference between buying the magazine on the newsstand and getting it sent by subscription.

Beauty with Benefits – lash serum product review

RapidLash® Enhancing Serum

Last week I sampled the latest mascaras from too-faced. Ones that help to temporarily lengthen and thicken your lashes, but what’s all this hype about lash renewal serums? – the ones that promote your very own lashes to grow gradually over time? Some people claim to see longer lashes in about four weeks, with full growth at 16 weeks. I had to check it out.

By now everyone has heard of that other famous lash product called Latisse. I was curious to try it but decided against it. The reasons are such: 1) my own lashes are adequate enough. 2) Latisse is a prescription drug. 3) The effects of Latisse are not permanent and the drug can cause eye or eyelid discoloration (although it’s very rare) 4) Average Price: $125.00.  I have heard that it definitely works.

We do not know exactly how LATISSE® works; however, we believe it does so by increasing the growth cycle (anagen) phase of your eyelash hair cycle. Anagen is the growth phase of all hair. We believe that it increases the length of the anagen phase and the number of hairs in this growth phase. It’s easy, the treatment you apply yourself each evening to the base of the upper eyelashes.

Then I went to Costco in the U.S. and saw Rapidlash, a very similar product but you don’t need a prescription and the cost was significantly less at $49.95.  Definitely worth the splurge – adequate is never enough right? So here’s what I found:

rapidlash2Friday, September the 13th was exactly 8 weeks since I first started to apply it – at night only.  I took before and after photos and it appears that my lashes increased by about 25%.  By the end of the first week of November it will be 16 weeks and more than enough time to give a full product review since this product claims that you can see results in as little as four weeks.

This is what the company has to say (not sure about the part that you may never need to wear mascara or eyebrow pencil ever again):

RapidLash® Eyelash & Eyebrow Enhancing Serum

Enhance the appearance of lashes and brows with RapidLash® Eyelash Enhancing Serum. What’s better than SEX? – mascara magic product review

In the beauty cabinet.  We’re talking about mascara.

IMG_20130904_170300

Wow; if the names alone don’t get you then the new crop of  lengthening, thickening and now false lash extending mascara will.  I’m comparing a product called ‘Better than False Lashes’ to a product called ‘Better than Sex’ – both from “Too Faced” which is a great line.  I was curious & wanted to try both so I went into Sephora mascaraless, tried one on my left eyelashes & the other on my right eyelashes. It was the only way to really compare.

One thing I did not do was curl the lashes first which is always better.  Also the little brushes they give you for sampling aren’t up to par – but still you get the idea.IMG_20130904_170321

First, Better than Sex Mascara is really not Better than real Sex…..

& hopefully you don’t really believe that although it is a very nice thickening mascara.  Let me say that L’Oréal Voluminous for about $25 less is almost as nice.  But we do tend to get caught up with names (orgasm blush anyone?) It does work though.mascara1 The sales person (who will go nameless to protect the guilty) was wearing Voluminous while directing me to ‘Better Than’ which should give you a hint.

The winner – Better Than: I’ve never worn false eyelashes or have ever had lash extensions but know many women who have.  They look fantastic but I can’t be bothered applying fake lashes that I’ll most likely rub off.  The ‘better than false eyelashes’ (but how would I really know) seemed like a good mascara2alternative.

The three step program comes in a kit which includes a black mascara that acts as your base and top coat and a small tube full of tiny white nylon (teddy bear like) fibers that stick 001to your own lashes. First, you apply the base coat which goes on easy like any everyday black mascara. Next, the magic happens. You apply 1-2 coats of the nylon fibers which are also applied like a mascara & they adhere to your lashes making them feel thicker and longer (although they’re white until you apply the top coat). Last, you apply another coat… or two of the black mascara and then you really see longer, thicker lashes. Best part – no glue required!

 INSTANT (well, almost) GLAMOUR!

Drug Store Delights- dry oil product review

FRUCTIS TRIPLE NUTRITION “Miracle Dry Oil” by Garnier
Triple LotionNot “just” another product for the bathroom shelf – although I was a bit skeptical.  Take it for what it is:
A miracle multi-use dry oil enriched with olive, avocado and almond oils that seems to deliver rapid nourishment to hydrate dry hair and skin without the oiliness.  A lot of bang for your buck – it only costs about $6.00.
Perfect for traveling as it comes in a 5 fl oz. (150 ml) plastic spray bottle.  It smells really nice (a bit floral + bit fruity) but it’s light and not overpowering.  I already use an oil for face but for dry areas it seems to work & sinks right in. Do not spray directly on face – spray onto your palm first & use sparingly. For legs & arms it absorbs great.
Haven’t tried it on my hair yet but it probably works as well as the Moroccan oil I have.  In any event for the price it’s definitely worth trying.  Wouldn’t you agree?
001Bio-Oil – the true “Miracle” Oil?
Bio‑Oil has won 135 skincare awards and has become the No.1 selling scar and stretch mark product in 16 countries since its global launch in 2002.
We’ll see as I’ve been testing it out for about a month now on my knees (which were badly scraped from a fall last summer).  It seems to have helped to reduce the scars which now appear more faint.  It would have helped more to use it immediately after but better late than never.
The *Bio‑Oil formulation is a combination of plant extracts and vitamins suspended in an oil base. It contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, which changes the formulation’s overall consistency, making it light and non-greasy.
*You can buy this product at Costco too (comes in a two-pack, one large & one regular size) which will last you a lifetime – even if you live to be 200.

beauty – the SKIN Commandments

Simply follow these 10 tenets and thou shalt possess healthy, smooth, glowing skin for life.

http://en.paperblog.com
Images – paperblog.com

1) Thou Shalt Always Use Sunscreen (yes, even in winter).

Of all the skin sins, going out unprotected is the worst. UV rays cause 90 percent of wrinkles, sun spots and other signs of aging. And although face lotions with sunscreen ward off burning UVB rays, not all fully shield you from UVA, the deeply penetrating light that ages skin. What to look for: If your skin is sensitive, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are natural minerals with stellar UVA coverage; otherwise, you may want the longer-lasting protection of chemical-based SPF with UVA-blocking avobenzone or octocrylene.

2) Honor the Change of Seasons

Just as you swap sweaters for sundresses come summer, pull a switcheroo for skin care twice a year. What your complexion craves in warm weather (less oil! ample sunscreen!) is different from the TLC it requires in cooler temps.

A few months from now, dry winter air will rob moisture from your skin, says Marsha Gordon, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City for St. Ives. Stick with your daytime SPF-laced lotion, but also apply a rich cream or oil at night to keep skin soft & supple.

3) Leave no Skin Unbuffed

Your skin regenerates every 28 days on average, but this process slows down—even as early as your mid-20s,” says David Bank, M.D., a dermatologist in Mount Kisco, New York. Exfoliating removes dead cells lying on skin’s surface, revealing prettier skin.  For face Use a finely ground scrub or a chemical exfoliant (alpha hydroxy, lactic or glycolic acid) up to three times a week after cleansing, Dr. Bank suggests.

For body The skin here is thicker than that on your face & neck —which means it can handle more intense scrubbing. Smooth skin every other day with a salt- or sugar-based body polish; they’re grainy enough to soften your roughest parts.

4) Love Thy Skin in the A.M. & P.M.

Your anti-aging plan should be a twice-a-day habit, like brushing your teeth. A consistent routine gives you healthier, younger-looking skin not only now but in 10, 20, even 30 years, says Jeffrey Dover, M.D., coauthor of The Youth Equation (Wiley).  In the morning, use peptides, which lessen lines and improve texture (and won’t make skin sun-sensitive). Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Serum (approx. $25) is an inexpensive & apparently effective choice.

At night, reach for an over-the-counter retinol or prescription retinoid treatment to stimulate new collagen production and cell turnover and to lighten brown spots.

5) Give thy Body its Daily Moisturizer

The skin on your body has far fewer oil glands than your face (100 per ½-inch square versus 900), making it prone to flakes. Never miss a chance to hydrate.

A fast dry-skin fix Reach for a lotion with a gentle, low-dose chemical exfoliant such as lactic acid.  Your long-term supple-skin plan Apply lotion to damp skin (to seal in water), wait for it to be absorbed, then top it off with a second layer. Body hydrators contain ingredients like jojoba oil and shea butter as well as sealants that coat skin, “so two back-to-back applications trap even more moisture into skin,” Dr. Bank says.

6) Covet thy Covers

“When you’re sleep-deprived, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol,” says Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, M.D., a dermatologist in Miami. And excess cortisol has been linked to acne, as well as sensitive and dry skin. Follow these easy sleep-better tips tonight for more beautiful skin tomorrow—and beyond.

Your nightly TV lineup may keep you from tucking in the requisite seven to eight hours of shut-eye, resulting in a sleep debt, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia report. Set your DVR and try to watch late-airing shows early the next evening instead.

Cut back on caffeine. Research shows that even one cup of joe disturbs nighttime sleep in some people, leaving them more tired and reaching for more caffeine, creating a cycle of sleepiness—and coffee addiction!

7) Never (ever!) Pop or Touch Pimples.

“Your hands can transfer more breakout-inducing bacteria to the area,” Dr. Blyumin-Karasik says. “And most people squeeze too hard, causing trauma to skin.” Both of which mean your pip-squeak pimple may turn into a huge, inflamed cyst. Zap zits safely.

Got a lone blemish? Reduce redness with an OTC anti-inflammatory cortisone cream twice a day; banish bacteria with benzoyl peroxide nightly, says Diane Berson, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.

8) Treat the Body as thou Would thy Face

Unless you bundle up in a turtleneck and gloves year-round, the same damaging UV rays that shine on your face will hit your neck, chest and hands. “Yet most women act as if there’s a stop sign at their jaw,” says Dr. Dover, who advises rubbing skin treatments all the way down to your cleavage, then wiping the excess on your hands, too.

9)      Get thee to a Gym

Aside from keeping you healthy, energized and slim, working out has specific benefits for your complexion.  It increases circulation. When skin is supplied with enough blood, oxygen and nutrients, it’s able to bring its A-game and look smooth and healthy all the time. Wounds healed about 29 days faster among older adults who exercised than among those who were sedentary, research from The Ohio State University at Columbus finds.

It calms you (and skin) down. Exercise is a proven mood booster. Working up a sweat helps your body better regulate stress hormones linked to anxiety and depression, as well as acne, sensitivity and dryness. Incorporate a quick bout of cardio into your weekly workout routine to get happy—a 20-minute sweat session can improve mood for up to 12 hours, according to researchers at the University of Vermont in Burlington—and keep skin looking fresh, too.

10)      Eat thy Fruits, Vegetables and Fish

New research suggests a healthy diet may fend off your skin’s top enemies. Phytochemicals and antioxidants (in leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes, etc.) and fatty acids from fish such as salmon allow your body to fight sun-induced damage. Low-glycemic foods (with fewer sugars) may prevent collagen breakdown by reducing cell inflammation and subsequent destruction of skin’s support structure.

AMEN!

Beauty with Benefits – Cuticle Care 101

Well girls….our job is never done!HealthyNails-636

Last week I posted about the latest trends in nail polish because when most people think of nail care they think of nail polish, or fingernail problems like peeling, chipping, and cracking. But your cuticles also contribute to nail health and a neat appearance. Uncared-for cuticles are prone to hangnails and dryness, while badly cut or bitten cuticles put the skin around the fingers at a risk of infection.  My cuticles have always been troublesome until recently, now that I’ve found the perfect solution – see below for product reviews.

By following these cuticle-care guidelines, you can prevent cuticle disasters & help maximize your manicure’s good looks at the same time.

Moisturize

No matter how well you think you moisturize your hands, your cuticles are especially thirsty for hydration. They’re soaked and dried every time you wash your hands, they’re exposed to chemicals when you clean or work without gloves. If you’re not already rubbing a good quality moisturizer (see below) into your nails and fingertips every day, start doing it. If you do moisturize, and you still get hangnails or dryness, start to do it twice.

Never cut your cuticles

Your cuticles perform a valuable job: protecting the roots of your nails from invasion by harmful bacteria. If you cut them away, they won’t be able to do their job. Same if you cut them poorly. Instead, push the cuticles back with a non-metal tool, such as a rosewood stick. However, bear in mind…

Don’t Push Back Dry Cuticles. Cuticles are not only easier to nudge back when they’re moist, it’s also safer. Pushing on a wet, flexible cuticle is much less likely to lead to tears or other damage. Try pushing back your cuticles right after you get out of the shower, or soak your fingertips for a short time in a bowl of warm water.

Push Back Cuticles Like a Pro. There are three steps to the push-back: One, apply a cuticle remover (balm works better than an oil or cream – see below). Two, use an orange stick to gently push back your nice moist cuticles. Finally, move the orange stick in tiny circles at the base of the nail to remove any clinging dead skin that’s there. Repeat the last step as necessary.

Trim Hangnails Carefully. While it’s not a good idea to cut your cuticles, it’s fine to cut your hangnails. Just go about it with caution: again, you’re trying to avoid causing infection. Use a sharp cuticle nipper (I recommend Tweezerman) that you’ve cleaned with alcohol or peroxide beforehand, and apply antibacterial ointment to the cut areas immediately afterwards—especially if you slip up and draw blood (ouch!).

Choose Nail Care Products Wisely.  Acetone-based nail polish removers and polishes and treatments with formaldehyde, including formaldehyde resins, are just as bad for your cuticles as they are for your nails. Dump any nail polishes or nail treatment products made before the end of 2007, which are likely to contain formaldehyde, and look for removers that are labeled acetone-free. Both of these chemicals, in addition to being toxic, cause dryness and irritation of cuticle skin.

I love a nice cuticle oil like this from Island Girl - from Hawaii ABC shop.
This floral scented cuticle oil from Island Girl is best for finishing off your manicure with a swipe after polish. Available at ABC stores – Hawaii + Las Vegas.

It’s simple: healthy cuticles look better than unhealthy ones. And healthy cuticles help keep nails healthy too. My TOP picks:Eye Get Spoil

This 20% shea butter and cream from L'Occitane is great.
Don’t forget the hands.  This 20% shea butter  in a tube from L’Occitane is one of the best hand creams ever invented.

The one in the blue jar is called BALMshell & it works best of all. Infused with healing essential oils my nails have never been  healthier, seriously!

SkIN: The Truth about SERUMS

One step at a time…

abelladonna.com
abelladonna.com

You can use it alone but it’s best to apply before sunscreen for day and nightcream.  Is it essential?  I’ll let you decide.  It’s one more step we may need to follow.

Serums may be the costliest product in many skin care lines but when properly applied, a 1-ounce container should last months.  Serums contain more active ingredients than other products so you need just the tiniest amount – those few concentrated drops are super-efficient. Serums are made of very small molecules, so the skin absorbs them quickly and deeply. Thicker, heavier ingredients found in creams form a barrier on your skin that’s great for locking moisture in. The active ingredients in a serum penetrate your skin faster and more effectively.

Serums do not include ingredients such as petrolatum or mineral oil that keep water from evaporating. They also contain fewer lubricating and thickening agents, like nut or seed oils. Most serums are water-based, eliminating oils altogether.

Think of it as faster and lighter – many of the qualities we look for in a car, a laptop, and our bodies when we’re running a marathon. They’re also the prized attributes of skin care serums – light, fast-absorbing liquids used as an alternative or in addition to creams or lotions.  This from Web.MD

Like so many things in the skincare department, there are too many brands to list here.

My top picks:

Beautiful Skin – Face Masks

face mask The natural next step to exfoliation which was covered last week, is putting on a  FACE MASK.  Face masks are an excellent way to help maintain beautiful skin.  Once to twice a week is enough.  Now to figure out which one works for our skin type and then decide  what to invest in.

Clarins hydrating mask
Clarins Hydra Quench Cream Mask

Our skin can change depending on the season so you might be more oily in summer and drier in winter. Sometimes we need something to calm our skin rather than hydrate it.  I alternate using  a hydrating cream mask from Clarins or Origins “drink up” coupled with Ahava dead sea mud mask for the t-zone area.  I also stole a little have some dead sea mud from when I  floated like jelly in the Dead Sea itself.  Lasts forever.  What an experience!

Ahava Dead Sea Scrub and MASK
Ahava Dead Sea Scrub and MASK

Love the Japanese ultrafine sheet masks by Puresa with CoQ10. They come in an orange kleenex-style box & each mask you pull out completely fits over and adheres to your face with holes cut out for eyes + nose.  Try not to scare anyone who sees you though.

TIP:  if the mask says to leave it on for 10 minutes, leave it on for 10 minutes – not 20.  It won’t make your skin nicer by leaving it on longer.  Trust me on this.

Here are a few starters to help:

1 Dry & Sensitive Skin

A hydrating mask is great for dry or sensitive skin. Opt for a cream formula (rather than a clay or exfoliating mask) to replenish your skin’s hydration. You want to rejuvenate and protect your skin rather than dry it out or inflame it with too much scrubbing. A “DIY” recipe of Greek yogurt and a teaspoon of honey is fantastic for dry skin. Yogurt also contains enzymes, so it works to get rid of any flaky dead skin. The soothing remedy will also help to maintain your skin’s natural oils.

Try – Yes To Cucumbers Soothing Facial Mask

2 Acne-Prone Skin

If you want to deep clean your pores, start with a clay or gel mask. You can even add oil into a gel mask for double the impact! Using facial oil as a mask is fantastic for acne-prone or oily skin. Fighting oil with oil will actually re-balance your sebaceous glands and help heal your spots. It’s extremely important to re-balance the natural oils within your skin. By drying out your face too much your skin will make even more oil to compensate, so you end up with more clogged pores than you had to start with!

Try – Clean & Clear Blackhead Eraser Cleansing Mask

3 Oily Skin

A clay or exfoliating mask is perfect for oily skin, as it works to exfoliate and draw impurities out of the skin. The minerals and vitamins will leave your face feeling soft and supple but will dry it out a little, so finish with a hydrating mask to replenish moisture and restore your skin’s balance. You want to re-hydrate your skin and heal it.

Try – Alba Botanica Natural Even Advanced Deep Sea Facial Mask

4 Combination Skin

origins drink up
ORIGINS

This is me.  Combination skin should be addressed in separate parts. There can be different skin types all over your face, so treat each area accordingly. Apply a clay mask to your T-zone (Ahava is excellent) if it’s oily, and a hydrating mask—like the homemade yogurt concoction or a bought one (like Clarins or Origins) to the rest of your face.  Another good at-home version is to mash up some pineapple and mix it with yogurt. The natural enzymes in fruits such as pineapple and papaya are excellent at removing dead skin cells.

Try – Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub in conjunction with the above.

What would you recommend?
