Feel-good Friday: Free

Blame it on the season.  I feel like floating freestyle.debbiefolkfest4debbiefolkfest1debbiefolkfest2ydebbiefolkfest3Summer is like the ultimate one night stand….hot as hell, totally thrilling and gone before you know it.

So even if I stay around home I try to make the most of it.

Most of July and all of August I am commitment free.  It’s a promise I made to myself to take time to do nothing but enjoy moments in whatever manner I choose. So I cancel classes, make no set appointments or promises and go about my daily life in a  spontaneous mode.

But with lots to think about.  If you’re signed up for a season, see it through.

Yesterday I made a picnic lunch and rode my bike to a lovely park with the dogs and then at night a beach barbeque with 3 dogs in tow.  A perfect day.

It is not only inspiring but helps to bring everything else into perspective.

Feel-good Friday: Doggone Rules

Some guys are worth breaking the RULES for…

Some like it hot

Somebody said “you weren’t put on this earth to simply break even.  You’re here to break rules, break records and break through.”

Some prefer taking chances without wearing a life vest and wonder why there ae no other adventurous dog kayakers.
Some will take chances with no life vest.  All Jack is concentrating on is why there are no other adventurous dog kayakers.

Some like to play in the big leagues – While living in Bangkok Jack says “when my humans told me the next door neighbour had a cat I had no idea the scope.  I didn’t want to be a pussy.

Feel-good Friday: the girl with the XXX Tattoo!

At a recent gathering my friend and I could not help but notice a girl who had her back turned towards us.  A very interesting back it was.

I just got back. Photo: d. king

Unfortunately I cannot read Chinese so my friend Margeaux and I approached this girl and told her how much we admired her tattoo and her exposed back in general and would she please mind explaining to us the meaning.  There were two meanings.  I have to admit that the first meaning as beautiful as it sounded I cannot remember (it was a wine tasting event after all) for the life of me.  Actually we didn’t fully understand what she said but I’m sure it was as meaningful and as spiritual as the one which we clearly understood.  Food for Thought:

Strong Souls have Wills, Weak ones have only Wishes.

One more thing…the tattoo wouldn’t look the same written in English.  We would have a lot of figuring out how to frame it – along the width of your back or spiraling downward.  Either way, it shows more beautiful in Chinese characters.

What do you think about tattoos in general?

HAPPY CANADA DAY to my fellow Canadians!

I’m in Whistler with a longtime friend who I first met while working in Tokyo, before she moved to London, England.  Lots of catching up to do.  She first flew to San Francisco just days before BREXIT became official so we’ll be discussing the pros and cons of that.

Have a wonderful weekend!

ART – Natures Greatest Artist

He’s a small fish in a big sea with one thing on his mind (not unlike other male species) – what can I do to attract a mate? hardwork4Ahhh….think I’ll create a masterpiece like all the greats before me.

 That’ll grab her attention!

Unfortunately the small Japanese Puffer Fish is apparently dull almost to the point of invisibility, but to compensate he’s probably nature’s greatest Artist.   To get a female’s attention he creates something in the ocean floor which almost defies belief…with his only tool – his fins in order to attract her.  How charming is that?

In his head a pound of mathematical perfection.  He plows the sand, breaking it up into the finest of particles.  He uses shells to decorate the bridges of his construction.

He can’t rest for more than a moment.  He’s a total workhorse fish. He must work for 24 hours a day for one week or the current will destroy his creation.

A final tidy up and his masterpiece is complete!  Because…hardwork1

I would definitely go out with him..if I were a little fish.  Looks aren’t everything!hardwork3

Feel-good Friday: the unexpected journey

When you live with an open heart, expect joyful things to happen.

Life is full of surprises and everybody has a story.  I have a knack for meeting some interesting and unusual people but the one common denominator is that they all have something to teach me.

Like the time I walked Jia Jia on his 13th birthday (February 14th, 2016) and literally from out of nowhere we met this fun girl Kellie with her two puppet friends and a photographer who was trying to capture shots for Kellie’s new album cover.  They expressed interested in using Jia Jia for the cover (as of course, he’s  model cover material) and the puppets started talking to him on their own.  Kellie didn’t say a word.  We were mesmerized!  It definitely added some magic to the day and made it an extra special birthday for Jia Jia.  And it reminded me of living at home when my brother and I played with a human-like ventriloquist puppet that we would talk to…but it never spoke back.

And it went to prove that my dolls really did speak to me when I was a child.

About Kellie

Ventriloquist Kellie Haines started talking to her stuffed animals at an early age and when she was 8 years old they started talking back! A multi-talented entertainer with a background in theatre, clowning, singing and dance, Kellie and her puppet pals have amazed and delighted audiences of all ages throughout North America.
Kellie’s new CD is called The Story of Me, Myself & I.
The theme of my album is about turning challenges into successes. I wanted to get across the idea that it’s okay for children and youth to go through challenges. You can get through hard times but you must never give up, and I wanted to talk about this through music. The songs on this album also connect to when I was growing up on our farm. I had a lot of energy as a child and would often be found climbing up door frames, jumping from trees or daydreaming. If I was worried I would get outside into nature and just ‘be.’  My dad taught us to plant trees every year to give back to the farm. My mom and dad would walk with us three kids and talk to us about our feelings and how we were doing at school. The farm was a refuge for me and a place for me to develop my talents.

Yeah; I expected that!

After a hard day at play Jack blends in well an outdoor throw. Green as it turns out is his favourite colour.

Feel-good Friday: It’s April!

I think the best day of the year to ask someone to marry you is April 1st!

because if she/he accepts and you get cold feet, you always have an out – after all, it’s April Fools!

Things to love about APRIL

For starters the Spring bouquets.  Friends brought these over last Sunday.  20160328_091519

It brings us that much closer to SUMMER.

My sisters birthday is in April (infact she was born on an Easter Sunday).

We can always put more SPRING in our step as things begin to lighten up.

In April everything seems to come to life again, birds have a lot to say, animals are in heat and some people too.

easterAfter Easter we get a long break from major holidays and can relax more.

Everything is in bloom or starting to bloom and looking much prettier.

I think the quote below (unlike mine above) from Shakespeare pretty much sums it all up:

“April hath put a spirit of youth in everything” – William Shakespeare, Sonnets.

Youth and Spirit are two of the most uplifting words in the English language.  I hope things are looking cheery and brighter for everyone.  At least for me, that’s the promise of Springtime.

Friday is my second favourite F word!

FABULOUS is my first favourite F word.  What were you thinking?

Enjoy your long weekend and if you celebrate Easter try to lay off eating too many chocolate eggs!

I’ve invited a few friends and family over for dinner on Sunday and each place setting will have an easter egg filled with starburst jelly beans – just because. The dogs will hunt for toys and treats (Jack already knew how to play hide ‘n seek so now Jia Jia plays too). They’re told to sit and wait while I hide something and then they run excitedly trying to find it. Sometimes I make it more challenging for them. AND I’m trying out a brand new dessert which I’ll tell you about later providing it turns out.  Something I’ve been wanting to make for a long time but never got around to.

Isn’t every Friday a good friday?
