B well – B organic

Little healthful tidbits that go a long way

Eat Well – Feel Well – Look Well

organicMany times I come across a great article in a magazine or from another blog that I just want to share.  This is one of them.  Even though this post on eating organic foods is geared mostly towards those suffering from adult acne, it seems like it can’t hurt for keeping your skin healthy in an overall sense.

If you’re a fan of organic beauty products, then chances are you try to eat organic too at least when practical. And while that might contribute to your overall health, we can’t help but wonder-does eating organic actually improve your skin too? It turns out it can.

Eating organic food may decrease your amount of acne overtime,” says Montclair, NJ, dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD. That’s because non-organic food that gets pumped with hormones like chicken, meat and dairy, can cause hormonal acne.

Charlotte, NC, dermatologist Gilly Munavalli, MD, says non-organic dairy products in-particular seem to contribute to breakouts among his patients. “People who have really bad acne who are drinking a lot of milk and start breaking out, we think that’s the mechanism,” he says. “Some people are reactive to the hormones so we recommend using organic dairy.” He adds that adult acne in women over 40 is always hormone-related, so cutting non-organic dairy may help in that situation too.

It also doesn’t hurt to eat organic fruits and vegetables. After all, most get covered in pesticides and wax (to keep them fresh), and while there isn’t a specific study that proves these ingredients harm the skin, their overall unhealthy affect on your body could be reflected in the form of dull skin and an overall tired look.

“Your body is not the sum of individual organs working alone. It is a complex, interconnected, marvelous machine with harmoniously functioning parts, of which your skin is one,” says Santa Ana, CA, dermatologist Tony Nakhla, MD.

“Your skin tells the story of your days in the sun, but it also reflects the general health of your internal organs and your entire body as a whole.”

Beauty with Benefits – Exfoliating

exfoliate2Your morning routine can easily take a turn for the worst if just seconds after applying face cream, you notice dry, flaky skin appear. Naturally, anyone will go into defense mode and re-up the hydration, but those patchy spots could be a sign that you’ve skipped a critical cleansing step: Exfoliation.

One of the best things you can do for your skin is to exfoliate it. Helping to ease congestion in spotty, blemished skin, it refines pores and can give dry skin back a bit of its lustre. But there’s more to exfoliating than whacking on some gritty stuff out of a tube every now and then. Here are a few things you may not know about how to get – and keep – skin looking its absolute best:

  1. Oils have a mild exfoliative effect and this makes them brilliant for use as a moisturizer before bedtime. Over night, skin is renewed and you’ll wake up looking fresher. Plus, oils are really nourishing, comforting and perfect for dry complexions. oil - CopyTry getspoilednow.com
  1. Face cloths can help to gently resurface skin too – but not lovely fluffy ones. Nope, a cheaper, thinner version is your best choice – try something like studio 35 beauty – premium exfoliating facial cleansing pads.  One side is soft for wiping and the other side has a micro-bead exfoliating surface.  Use with a creme or gel cleanser, and skin will be given that little extra bit of help.

  1. How often should we be scrubbin’ with the exfoliating grains, gels or pastes? Two to three times a week, and no more. The old fashioned Biore pore strips are still one of the best ways for removing dirt & blackheads around the nose area.  I try to use it once a week.biore
  1. Rice and fruit are brilliant ingredients for exfoliant products – the acids in fruit gently resurface skin without too much scrubbing, and rice is less harsh than pumice or the gritty grains you often find in cheaper brands. Here’s an excellent choice:
    MICABella

Mica Bella’s Vita-C Exfoliating Peeling Gel provides gentle exfoliation and vitamin C, all in one! They’ve taken advantage of a new technology to formulate the ”Vitamin C beads.” The Peeling Gel removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin silky smooth + with a healthy glow!  Available online at: http://www.intrigueimports.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_16&products_id=132

  1. Exfoliating skin does more than just clear congestion and blemishes – it can make you look younger too. How? Dead skin cells settle in lines and make them appear deeper. Clear the gunk out and it stands to reason you’ll look less lined.

For a beautifully silky & relaxing body lotion this is my all time FAVORITE:Dream Silk Body Lotion  DREAM SILK COMFORT CREAM from earththerapeutics.com

Especially for at night before bed as it slips on like a cozy pair of silk pajamas.  Made with infusions of valerian root and lavender which calms, comforts, soothes and relaxes for a deep restful sleep.

I first encountered this lotion in a yoga class when the instructor came around rubbing it into each and everyone’s temples during Shavasana.  I was immediately hooked – sometimes it only takes one try.

Drugstore Diva – Product Review

Delightful Drugstore Deals for LIPS:

These two products work wonderfully and are a fraction of the price of other name brands.  For under $10.00 you can’t beat them.

These can be mix'n matched
A nice color selection for spring/summer which can be mix ‘n match.

Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick –  did almost everything the ads suggested.  They provided a velvety texture with moisturizing shea butter & aloe and lasted “almost” all-day which for me was enough.  All in all it’s a great lipstick without the big price tag and rates right up there with much higher priced lipsticks.

On a softer note: both RevlonJust Bittenbalm stain and CovergirlJumbo Gloss Balm” are excellent.

Revlon & Covergirl
Revlon & Covergirl Lip Balms

They’re very moisturizing and depending on which shade you choose can provide a nice sheer color.  In my opinion they rate right up there with the Clinique Chubby Sticks which are at least double the price.

That’s not to say we can stop shopping at Sephora or other department stores but it’s nice to have an option.  I’ll be reviewing more finds in the weeks to come as I’ve become somewhat of a drugstore junkie.  Stay tuned….
