Seen – Poetry in Motion

blogIt’s been too long since my last visit to the Vancouver Aquarium so last week I was thrilled to be able to spend a whole afternoon there.  At first it was the beluga whales that I most wanted to see, but in the end I spent more time exploring the new “Jellyfish Invasion” exhibit which was absolutely breathtaking.  The movement & colors were mesmerizing. It’s also a no-brainer.  Jellyfish have no brain.blog3

Jellyfish get a lot of negative press for the threats they can pose to swimmers and holiday makers visiting beaches around the world. But there’s more to jellyfish than a nasty sting.  Here are a few facts:

Jellyfish are made up of more than 95% water.

They have no brain, no blood and no nervous system.

blog5There are about 200 species of true jellyfish.

Their senses are primitive and consist of a neural net, eye spots that can sense light from dark, and chemosensory pits that help them identify potential prey.

They’re real pretty!

B well – B organic

Little healthful tidbits that go a long way

Eat Well – Feel Well – Look Well

organicMany times I come across a great article in a magazine or from another blog that I just want to share.  This is one of them.  Even though this post on eating organic foods is geared mostly towards those suffering from adult acne, it seems like it can’t hurt for keeping your skin healthy in an overall sense.

If you’re a fan of organic beauty products, then chances are you try to eat organic too at least when practical. And while that might contribute to your overall health, we can’t help but wonder-does eating organic actually improve your skin too? It turns out it can.

Eating organic food may decrease your amount of acne overtime,” says Montclair, NJ, dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD. That’s because non-organic food that gets pumped with hormones like chicken, meat and dairy, can cause hormonal acne.

Charlotte, NC, dermatologist Gilly Munavalli, MD, says non-organic dairy products in-particular seem to contribute to breakouts among his patients. “People who have really bad acne who are drinking a lot of milk and start breaking out, we think that’s the mechanism,” he says. “Some people are reactive to the hormones so we recommend using organic dairy.” He adds that adult acne in women over 40 is always hormone-related, so cutting non-organic dairy may help in that situation too.

It also doesn’t hurt to eat organic fruits and vegetables. After all, most get covered in pesticides and wax (to keep them fresh), and while there isn’t a specific study that proves these ingredients harm the skin, their overall unhealthy affect on your body could be reflected in the form of dull skin and an overall tired look.

“Your body is not the sum of individual organs working alone. It is a complex, interconnected, marvelous machine with harmoniously functioning parts, of which your skin is one,” says Santa Ana, CA, dermatologist Tony Nakhla, MD.

“Your skin tells the story of your days in the sun, but it also reflects the general health of your internal organs and your entire body as a whole.”

Has underwear really changed over the years?

Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe
jesus fernandez

You bet! My sister just bought me a vintage Playboy magazine.  The date – 1972.  The cover price – one dollar.  Before you go thinking this is all too weird the cover reads “A Revealing History of Lingerie.”  As most of you are aware, I sell beautiful lingerie online.

Moving right along…throughout much of human history, female undergarments could not in truth be named – for the very good reason that they simply didn’t exist.  If she had to name them at all, she called them her unmentionables.  Mother Eve and her sensational little micro-mini fig leaf aside, modesty has, in fact, played virtually no part in the origin of any sort of human clothing – under or outer, male or female.013

From bloomers to thongs, pointy brassieres to pushup bras, the history of lingerie reveals a lot about women’s changing role in society – how we perceive ourselves and how we’re viewed by others. It’s fascinating to see how lingerie has changed over the last hundred years, but even more intriguing to note what’s stayed the same.

015Here’s a brief (pun intended) look at ladies undergarments throughout history:

Late 18th century – high fashion called for an ensemble of whalebone-stiffened corset and puff sleeved chemise.

19th century – was devoted largely to achieving fullness in strategic locations.  Watch- spring steel was used to make the dome-shaped “cage crinolines” & multiple layers of ruffled petticoats served the purpose for the Cancan girls of the naughty gaslight era.

1930’s – the uplift bra was responsible for the rise of a busty new breed of Hollywood star, of whom Lana Turner was the most prominent as the much photographed “sweater girl.”

1940’s – the spaghetti strap black-satin slip, once considered risqué, was memorably popularized by actress Silvana Mangano in the Italian neo-realist film “Bitter Rice.”

1950’s + 60’s – Swimwear had a mark influence in undergarment styles.  The bikini – which was first seen on French beaches in 1946, was transformed into lingerie over a decade later.

coneThe Bullet Bra (featuring exaggerated pointing or cone-shaped cups) and Push-Up Bra (by Frederick’s Of Hollywood) all debuted during this decade. Women now appeared to have breasts that almost reached their necks!  Panties became more colorful and decorative.

Liz Taylor

As the ’50s went on, Elizabeth Taylor in “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” made a fashion statement (and probably scandal) wearing a custom-made-slip through most of that movie.

Slips were also featured in “Psycho” with Janet Leigh in a white bra and slip, than later as a decamping embezzler in a black ensemble.

Frederick’s Of Hollywood and Maidenform became nationally prominent during this decade. Frederick’s was created by Frederick Mellinger (he claimed to have invented the first push-up bra) in 1946.  He started out with a racy catalog which quickly became popular, then branched out into a chain of more than 175 stores. You could say that Frederick’s was the Victoria’s Secret of its day.

1970’sFreedom at last!  The modern girl chucks underwear all together.  Whether you see the liberation of the female form as a manifestation of women’s lib or the sexual revolution, you’ll agree that it was easy on the wallet.  Of course for playboy viewing – easy on the eyes too.

1980’sUnderwear as Outerwear may have started here as Madonna began the trend by wearing her cone bra and girdles over her clothing.

1990’s – Who can forget the  famous Calvin Klein underwear ads featuring a young Kate Moss and Marky Mark (Wahlberg) showing off his Calvin Klein boxer briefs. Comfort is more in style – boyshorts for women are BIG.

2013As of 2009, the visible wearing of corsets had become fashionable, popularized by stage performers such as Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

And yet what goes around, comes around as they say.

Beauty with Benefits – Exfoliating

exfoliate2Your morning routine can easily take a turn for the worst if just seconds after applying face cream, you notice dry, flaky skin appear. Naturally, anyone will go into defense mode and re-up the hydration, but those patchy spots could be a sign that you’ve skipped a critical cleansing step: Exfoliation.

One of the best things you can do for your skin is to exfoliate it. Helping to ease congestion in spotty, blemished skin, it refines pores and can give dry skin back a bit of its lustre. But there’s more to exfoliating than whacking on some gritty stuff out of a tube every now and then. Here are a few things you may not know about how to get – and keep – skin looking its absolute best:

  1. Oils have a mild exfoliative effect and this makes them brilliant for use as a moisturizer before bedtime. Over night, skin is renewed and you’ll wake up looking fresher. Plus, oils are really nourishing, comforting and perfect for dry complexions. oil - CopyTry getspoilednow.com
  1. Face cloths can help to gently resurface skin too – but not lovely fluffy ones. Nope, a cheaper, thinner version is your best choice – try something like studio 35 beauty – premium exfoliating facial cleansing pads.  One side is soft for wiping and the other side has a micro-bead exfoliating surface.  Use with a creme or gel cleanser, and skin will be given that little extra bit of help.

  1. How often should we be scrubbin’ with the exfoliating grains, gels or pastes? Two to three times a week, and no more. The old fashioned Biore pore strips are still one of the best ways for removing dirt & blackheads around the nose area.  I try to use it once a week.biore
  1. Rice and fruit are brilliant ingredients for exfoliant products – the acids in fruit gently resurface skin without too much scrubbing, and rice is less harsh than pumice or the gritty grains you often find in cheaper brands. Here’s an excellent choice:
    MICABella

Mica Bella’s Vita-C Exfoliating Peeling Gel provides gentle exfoliation and vitamin C, all in one! They’ve taken advantage of a new technology to formulate the ”Vitamin C beads.” The Peeling Gel removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin silky smooth + with a healthy glow!  Available online at: http://www.intrigueimports.com/product_info.php?cPath=3_16&products_id=132

  1. Exfoliating skin does more than just clear congestion and blemishes – it can make you look younger too. How? Dead skin cells settle in lines and make them appear deeper. Clear the gunk out and it stands to reason you’ll look less lined.

*Brazilian beachwear label Movimento kicked off their very first summer fashion show with romantic florals, tropical camouflage and a unique variety of cuts, prints and silhouettes.

Their Inspiration: the counterpoint between the military aesthetic and tropical flowers, birds and landscapes.  With a collection infused with feminine prints, just enough  masculine elements were introduced (army-like buttons and stars, olive green & grey in the  palette) to keep the line fresh with a touch of edginess.

City Scene – it takes more than two to Tangoo

Like the dance,Tangoo is a metaphor for moving in a meaningful way across ones city. It embodies effortless and meaningful movement while always knowing the next step.

Tangoo’s mission is to make Vancouver a more fun and connected city.

Tangoo is the brainchild of Sauder School of Business alumni Henry Heeney and Paul Davidescu with one purpose in mind; to help Vancouverites get the most out of their evenings. The goal was to design a perfect evening out with a blend of distinct people & places, authentic food, stiff cocktails, and ultimately, great memories. Henry and Paul dreamed up the concept of Tangoo after visiting beautiful Barcelona and realizing that Vancouver’s social scene needed a boost. They had to find a way to ease the pain of disastrous last-minute group planning and the difficulty with meeting new people around the city. They succeeded!

Tangoo made the Globe and Mail’s TOP TEN Vancouver Attractions.

Cheers everyone!
Cheers everyone!

By being a part of a Tangoo evening you’re treated like a VIP where everything is taken care of beforehand so you get to enjoy a hassle-free night out.   I’ve enjoyed two Tangoo evenings so far and look forward to many more.  It’s a great way to meet new people, experience the best of Vancouver venues with drinks, appies, dinner, transportation (if required by limo, taxi or ferry boat depending on your location) and ending up at a popular nightclub.  Most places are within walking distance of each other which makes for easy access.  They offer Gastown evenings, or places in Yaletown for example and are expanding to more and more locations like the recent West End & Granville Island. They seek out the drinking and dining gems of Vancouver with groups of 30 or more seated within the same location for easy conversation.

B well – B fearless

WITH your FASHION choices and life in general.  If the shoe fits it will make you feel better.  Follow:

Designer Michael Kors’s Fashion Principles

“Now that everyone looks like she’s 30, it’s not easy to define rules for how women should dress at different ages,” says Kors.  Kors breaks down the elements of style:

Michael Kors
Michael Kors

Hemlines:  “Supershort skirts should be left to the young or the tennis court.  As you age, it’s more important to consider balance:  If you’re showing your legs, show less on top.”

Cleavage:  “It’s great to show off your best points, but still – leave a bit to the imagination.”

Prints:  “I don’t think you can tell a woman who feels like a million dollars when she puts on a bold, graphic print that she should stop wearing it just because she’s hit a certain age.  Wear what makes you feel beautiful.”

Color:  “The colors that suited you when you were 30 will still suit you when you’re 70.  Your skin tone and hair and eye color are the real question, not your age.”

Fit:  “Your clothes should look as if they were made just for you.  Forget the size tags and get to a tailor.  If you wear skinny jeans and you’re fit, stay true to your style.  And no matter your age, skip the pieces that make you fidget, whether it’s a shoe you can’t walk in or a hemline you have to keep pulling down.”

Jewelry:  “This is the best way to shake up your look at any age.  If you feel less comfortable showing skin, bold jewelry and strong accessories are great ways to play the fashion game.  Be fearless!

Trends:  “Avoid anything that doesn’t feel relevant to your style, but always evolve, or you’ll look stuck in the past.”

As told to Danielle Pergament for Allure Magazine.

Speaking of Etiquette: where are your MANNERS?

It’s a matter of Mind over Manners but if you’re rusty you can always brush up and order the book of Golden Rules from the world’s most glamorous zip code.

24 Karat Etiquette: Beverly Hills Manners. [Hardcover]  amazon.com

There is really a book for everything.  If you’re going to do it – do it right! Maybe you can find this in the “self-help” section of your local bookstore – if you still have a bookstore that is.  I think proper manners are getting to be almost obsolete – what a shame because even a simple please or thank you can make all the difference.  But a book on the subject? Which must mean that parents (shame especially on you 90210 parents!) are not taking the time to properly teach their kids.

Author Lisa Gaché (the modern Miss Manners) admits to not writing her very first thank-you note until she was married.  She is also the founder and C.E.O. of the book title’s Beverly Hills Manners, a decorum school she opened nearly seven years ago.  (Can this be the American version of the Swiss finishing school?) “That was the household I grew up in.  Manners, as I later learned, were not dusty rules but rather tools that help us feel more comfortable and help put each other at ease.”

Gaché started with a concierge service in Los Angeles; while doing that, she realized there was an etiquette vacuum that needed to be filled.  Also, as the mother of two daughters, she wanted to instill in her children the confidence that comes with having good manners.

She received official certification from the Protocol School of Washington, in D.C.  Her Beverly Hills Manners classes and private coaching include everything from children’s table manners to red-carpet protocol, and she has students as young as five years old.

Topping her list: dressing for the occasion and table manners.  “We live in an extremely casual society, etiquette where Lululemon and Havaianas are the uniform of choice.  So I am a big proponent of dressing.  When you take the time to put yourself together, it can color your world in a way that sets the tone for the day.”  And with respect to dining etiquette:  “There is a reason for tablecloths and utilizing real cloth napkins – not every night, but I think at least once a week – so that children can see what it’s like to sit still and how to properly cut their food and make pleasant conversation.”

One golden rule that costs no money and almost no effort that you can do right now – “Smile!”
