simply satisfying – grilled cherry tomato lollipops

So they’re not really lollipops, but the term “tomato skewers” sounded too mundane.

appy4

Summer screams of BBQ and we’re constantly heating up our grill to cook up whatever flavors epitomize the season.

Because these tomatoes are so cute and plump, it sounds more appropriate (and fun) to call them lollipops especially when you jab them onto sticks. Plus, they taste sweet like candy during this time of the year.

Have you ever grilled your cherry tomatoes? They’re super amazing and the texture is like roasted tomatoes, but you don’t have to turn on your hot oven in the Summer. And best of all, they have the wonderful bbq flavor to them. Before grilling place them in a bowl & gently mix with sea salt and a little olive oil & balsamic.appy2

A simple way to enjoy these grilled tomato skewer “lollipops” is on grilled bread swiped with a nice layer of ricotta cheese.  Make sure to make a big platter of these little skewer lollipops for your gathering because they’re sure to be a hit. They’re so good, your guests will probably eat them right off the skewers just like candy.

Or, hollow them out fresh ones & place a baby mozzarella inside dipped in olive oil & cilantro/parsley.
Or; freshly hollow them out & place rounded baby mozzarella inside dipped in olive oil & cilantro or parsley. Skewer on individual sticks for a lovely and tasty presentation.

ART/Out There: a guide to choosing ART for your home

Design, Art, Travel, Shopping – these are some of my favourite things!outthere3

Maria Gabriela Brito is an art collector and interior designer living in New York City and the author of Out There: Design, Art, Travel, Shopping ($60USD – Pointed Leaf Press).  outthere1The book is an insider’s guide to designing interiors and developing an art collection.  OUT THERE is a fresh and exclusive look behind the scenes of a passionate and exciting new design authority on mixing contemporary art with home decoration. It features highlights of Brito’s favorite contemporary artists, photographs of eight New York City apartments that she designed, and an extensive look at favorite galleries, shops, and hotels worldwide.

The following is taken from her interview by Danielle Pergament for Allure Magazine.

Rather than trying to match art to your furniture or throw pillows, look for work that you love but that is on the edge of your comfort zone in terms of brightness.  Color is the fastest way to bring life to a room.

Go BIG.  The bigger the piece, the more it will transform a room.  Don’t shy away from a large piece. People tend to choose art that is too small for the space.  Take your cue from the furniture your art will hang near.  If your sofa is 70 inches long, go for a piece that’s 50 inches:  if the couch is 96 inches long, try something that measures 80 inches.  If you can’t find one really big image you like, you can cheat by placing two side by side.  The bottom of the frame should sit six to ten inches above the top of the furniture, and the closer the top edge is to the ceiling, the higher your ceilings will look.

Present it Properly.  If you’re buying art from a gallery, follow their framing or mounting suggestions, which usually reflects the artist’s wishes.  As a general rule, stretched canvases don’t need a frame, and large photographs look best mounted in acrylic or Plexiglas.  If the colors of the artwork are muted, consider a colorful frame to liven it up.

Advance your Placement.  Before you automatically hang a new piece in the living room, think about your entire home.  Instead of the predictable console and mirror in a foyer, imagine a huge, vibrant print/painting there.  I especially love to incorporate smaller pieces of art in unexpected places, like a bathroom or kitchen.  In the bedroom, go a bit more subdued – black-and-white photography, for example – to keep the room peaceful.outthere2

How to hang a gallery wall.  Hallways make great mini galleries, but it can be tricky to hang lots of pieces of varying sizes.  Here’s how to do it: take a piece of butcher paper the size of the wall (or tape paper panels together) and put it on the floor.  Arrange all the artwork you want to hang on the paper.  You can play around until it really looks right, then use a pencil to mark exactly where each should go.  Tape the paper to the wall and hang each piece on its designated mark.  Finally, rip the paper carefully.  Voilà  – your own gallery.

WORDS: Wisdom from a Wise Woman

mata1Mata Amritanandamayi – humanitarian and spiritual leader

On Spirituality & Science: Spirituality is not against science. In fact it is the ultimate science. Science without spirituality is blind. Spirituality without science is lame. We need both.

On Love and Faith: Light the lamp of love within you and move forward. When we take each step with good thoughts and a smiling face, all the goodness will come to us and fill our being. Then God cannot possibly stay away from us. He will embrace us.

On The Secrets of the Universe: “When thoughts are reduced; power of the mind and it’s subtlety increases, tunes with the universe. Then you can see the realms beyond the common understanding. When the mind is pure and quiet it becomes one with the universal mind. That mind is like a mirror. The secrets of the Universe will be revealed there.”

Amma’s Desire: “Everyone in the world should be able to sleep without fear, at least for one night. Everyone should be able to eat to his fill, at least for one day. There should be at least one day when hospitals see no one admitted due to violence. By doing selfless service for at least one day, everyone should help the poor and needy. It is Amma’s prayer that at least this small dream be realized.” – –Mata Amritanandamayi Devimata2

Health MATTERS: Let’s go NUTS!

nuts1I’ve been going nuts for a while because these tiny treats come packed with major nutritional benefits. I put them in lots of things like homemade granola, energy bars & salads.  They’re one of the cornerstones of a Mediterranean diet and while all nuts are healthy, each variety has its own unique benefits.  Here are some of the standouts:

ALMONDS

Call them the skinny nuts.  In a 2013 study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people who ate about one and a half servings of almonds with breakfast felt a significant decrease in appetite.  When the nuts were consumed as an afternoon snack, they quashed appetites by about two and a half times that, helping subjects naturally eat less for the rest of the day.  Serving Size: 23 nuts, 164 calories.

WALNUTS

Walnuts not only taste great but are a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and an excellent source of those hard to find omega-3 fatty acids. Like most nuts, they can easily be added to your Healthiest Way of Eating. Just chop and add to your favorite salad, vegetable dish, fruit, or dessert. The form of vitamin E found in walnuts is somewhat unusual, and particularly beneficial. Researchers are convinced—more than ever before—about the nutritional benefits of walnuts when consumed in whole form, including the skin. We now know that approximately 90% of the phenols in walnuts are found in the skin, including key phenolic acids, tannins, and flavonoids. Serving Size: ¼ cup, 196 calories

PECANS

A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that people who consumed about three servings of pecans experienced as much as a 33 percent drop in oxidized LDL cholesterol (the kind that causes artery-clogging plaque to form).  The pecan’s power may lie in its high levels of heart-protecting antioxidants. Serving Size: 19 halves, 196 calories.

PISTACHIOS

Not only are pistachios the lowest-calorie nut of the bunch, but they’re also rich in healthy unsaturated fatty acids.  In a study, a group that consumed 20 percent of their daily calories from pistachios for nearly six months had lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels – two risk factors for heart disease – and trimmed their waistlines more than those who ate a wholesome but pistachio free- diet.  Great news – I love pistachios!  Serving Size: 49 nuts, 159 calories.

MACADAMIAS

These pack roughly 21 grams of fat per serving, but most of it is the unsaturated kind.  Macadamia nuts are an excellent source of two nutrients vital for healthy brain and nerve function: manganese (one serving delivers 65 percent of what you need daily) and the B vitamin thiamine (30 percent of your recommended dietary allowance).  Serving Size: 10-12 nuts, 204 calories.

BRAZIL NUTS

First the bad news: you can’t eat a lot of them.  Each of these Amazonian nuts contains about 33 calories – the equivalent of nearly 10 M&M’s.  Now the good news: You needn’t go overboard to reap their health benefits.  Just two nuts per day for 12 weeks can increase blood levels of the mineral selenium by 64 percent.  Selenium is essential for proper immune function, as it helps build germ-fighting white blood cells.  Serving Size: 6 nuts, 186 calories.

So, go NUTS!nuts2

Personally: speaking about style….

This goes to prove that true STYLE HAS NO AGE.

photo: Elle Decor

I admire Iris Apfel – she’s the real American Idol!

Most “it” girls fade into obscurity well before their first wrinkle but Iris found fame in her mid-80’s, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute mounted a show in her honor.  The almost 93 year-old (her birthday is in August) who just recently learned how to use the internet, answered a few questions for Allure magazine about retaining style in her tenth decade.

Can you remember your first major purchase?

“I’ll never forget it.  It was a brooch I found in a basement shop in Greenwich Village when I was 11.  I didn’t have a penny, so I saved and I saved.  I would return often to visit it. When I finally had 65 cents, I proudly went over there and haggled over it.  I still have it, by the way.”

Do you agree with the adage that before you leave the house, you should look in the mirror and remove one accessory?

“I say put another one on.  I like simple, architectural clothes.  With accessories, you can make 50 outfits.  I learned that from my mother because I was a child of the Depression.”

 What’s your everyday makeup look?

I don’t do very much for beauty. I use very simple things on my skin. I haven’t got time. I would always get facials, and then come home laden with product, and pay a lot of money and never use it. Anyway, one day a dermatologist told me to use Cetaphil to clean my face, and as a moisturizer, and that’s what I do.  “I only wear Cetaphil moisturizer and lipsick.  When I was younger, I did my eyes up like Miss Piggy, with heavy, big lashes, which we got with mustache wax.  You put a chunk of it in a spoon and held it over a flame, then you took a brush and you kept building the lashes layer after layer, and beaded the ends.  It was great-looking.  But as an older woman, too much eye makeup emphasizes wrinkles, and makes your skin look like a turtle.”

What’s the secret to aging gracefully?

“Don’t show your décolleté or wear low backs or heels you can’t balance on.  Worrying about getting old is the kiss of death – you have to be busy and engaged.  I can feel lousy until someone says: Let’s go to the flea market.  Once I’m there, no one can keep up with me.  You cannot be interesting if you’re not interested.”

The Huffington Post  has this to say: Iris Apfel is one of the most stylish, unique, energetic people you’ll ever meet in your life. While many of us go around in a fog of “What will people think?”-type thoughts regarding everything from clothes to decor choices, Apfel surrounds herself with what makes her happy. That’s it.

Now that’s someone worth admiring.

Born Iris Barrel in Astoria, Queens, New York.  Apfel is the only child of Samuel Barrel, whose family owned a glass-and-mirror business, and his Russian-born wife, Sadye, who owned a fashion boutique. Apfel studied art history at New York University and attended art school at the University of Wisconsin.. As a young woman, Apfel worked for Women’s Wear Daily and for interior designer Elinor Johnson. She also was an assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman.

Beauty biz – what makes Shea so much Butter?

I’m sure you’ve heard or read about it before and have seen it listed on many beauty care products.  It’s been around for a very long time.shea1 - Copy

Shea Butter is made from the nut of the African Shea tree and contains a rich amount of unremoveable fatty acid which renders it far superior to cocoa butter and other natural butters, but African women already know this. They’ve been using shea butter for so many years to protect and rejuventate their hair and skin.

This fatty acid is crucial to rejuvenating and moisturizing the skin.  Shea butter provides all the essential vitamins (especially vitamin A) needed to make skin look and feel smoother, softer and healthier.  The therapeutic properties stimulates cellular activity while protecting skin from the elements (wind, cold, sun) and helps wounds heal faster.  It has been used to heal burns, sores, scars, dermatitis, psoriasis, dandruff, and stretch marks.  Shea also contains cinnamic acid, a substance that helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays.

The container here doesn’t look so pretty (certainly won’t be front & center on  my vanity) but buyer beware: some of the companies with fancier versions will alter it in order to have a better fragrance, texture, overall appearance.  The alterations may disturb and in some cases destroy the natural integrity of the product. It will however, look much nicer on your bathroom shelf.

Listed below are some of the conditions that Shea Butter will provide improvement for. As you use this multi-purpose butter, you are likely to discover additional uses. The amount of time required for optimum results may vary with each condition. Wrinkles, for example, require 4 to 6 weeks of daily use. Itching is relieved immediately.

Dry skin

Skin rash

Skin peeling, after tanning

Blemishes and Wrinkles

Itching skin

Sunburn

Shaving cream for a smooth silky shave

Small skin wounds

Skin cracks

Tough or rough skin (Feet, Elbow)

Cold weather

Frost bites

Stretch mark prevention during pregnancy

Insect bites

Healthy skin

Muscle fatigue aches and tension

For before and after strenuous exercise

Skin allergies such as poison ivy or poison oak

Eczema

Dermatitis

Skin damage from heat, hot grease while cooking, radiation treatment for certain medical problems…

What can I tell by looking at the label?  Ingredients on the label should be listed in the order from the ingredient that is the most to the least.  Therefore, you should look for Shea Butter products that list Shea Butter early on the list of ingredients.

TIP: warm it up first in your hands before spreading it on your skin. Some people even put some in the microwave but I wouldn’t do this as it could break down the vitamins, interfering with the benefits.

Style –  the great Suspender

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT WEARING SUSPENDERS THAT FEELS kinda SPECIAL.

of course Beyonce can make anything look good.

They’re carefree but serve a purpose.  Like some of those other midcentury essentials (pocket squares & fedoras come to mind), suspenders feel new again.

Suspenders and occasion: From casual to business – The great thing about suspenders is that they go with almost every type of outfit. They are perfect for a casual everyday outfit, but also for a business one. They look just as great on a bartender as they look on a Wall Street guy. Formal suits work well with suspenders and look really fun and elegant at the same time.

How to Master the Art of Suspense:  Whether you’re a southern dandy or a new-look mod, the kind of suspenders you choose says it all.

suspense1Casual wear and suspenders

To obtain a certain look, it’s not the suspenders in themselves that make the outfit, they are just an accessory, it’s the overall vibe that sets the tone.

Power Broker
Bold, ass-kicking suspenders, to be worn with a sky blue spread collar dress shirt. Cuff links, mandatory; pinstripes, preferable. All topped off with an expression that says, “I will crush you.”

Is it Braces or Suspenders?

In the United Kingdom men put on braces to hold up their trousers, while suspenders are a belt used to hold up ladies’ tights. They’re basically a means of avoiding men’s pants from slipping down. I prefer them as a fashion statement of their own. But Nevermind all this…all you really need to know is the golden rule: Whatever you do, don’t wear suspenders with a belt.

These are my vintage suspenders.

simply: It’s time for GRILL TALK

grill1We all make mistakes. Here is Eight Grilling Mistakes and How to Avoid Them – according to the master herself grill2me, I mean Martha Stewart.

Grilling is supposed to be easy. You just heat up the grill and throw your food on, right? Well, not exactly — but it isn’t much more complicated than that. As summer approaches, don’t let popular grilling “wisdom” over complicate the issue. Read on to find out which so-called tips you can definitely ignore.

1. DON’T skip the salt: You might have heard that salting meat before grilling will toughen it. Nope, it won’t! In fact, season your meat about 30 minutes before you get grilling.

2. DON’T use lighter fluid to get the grill going: You’d be better off using a chimney starter — unless you like the taste of lighter fluid.

3. DON’T press hard on your burgers — especially while they’re cooking: If you do, you’ll watch the flavor and moisture drip right into the grill. Much better to place them on the grill and then leave them alone until they need to be flipped (which should only happen once!).

4. DON’T flip out: Grilling isn’t fussy, so there’s no need to keep flipping your meat. Turn it only once — twice at most.

5. DON’T use that barbecue fork: Remember what happened when you got your ears pierced? The same will happen if you stick a fork into a steak on the grill. We beg you, use tongs or a spatula.

6. DON’T battle flare-ups with a spray bottle of water: Water + grease = not a good time. Calm grease fires with a flame-resistant kitchen towel.

7. DON’T use a knife to check for doneness: That’s one sure way to ensure a dry, tough piece of meat. Like babies and college kids, steak needs to rest. Take it off the grill and leave it alone for a 10 minutes (more or less, depending on thickness).

8. DON’T cook meat all the way through: Remember, meat continues to cook even after you take it off the heat, so remove it before it’s exactly to your liking.

Any others you know about?

CULTURE/smoking around bébé: things Parisians do that stun New Yorkers and vice versa

ny5It’s no secret that, despite Bloombergian laws banning smoking in bars and restaurants, cigarettes are still everywhere in Paris in a way they just aren’t in New York anymore (go to a private party in Paris and prepare to take your jacket to the dry cleaner the next day). Café terraces are often wreathed in smoke. Parisians have a habit of casually flicking their cigarettes over their shoulders and into your café crème…but in a really cool way.ny6

That said, there’s one Parisian sight that elicits a special level of shock from visiting Americans: Fashionable, slim young parents (and they often are quite young, under 30, supported generously by the French government in their parenting) smoking outdoors in the presence of their babies or children. Ask Parisians about this and they’ll think you’re exaggerating. “That’s a myth,” said one (childless) friend. “French parents hide their smoking from their kids.” Another said, “French parents only do that outside in cafés, leaning away from their kids. Or on their balconies.” They miss the point that most yuppie American parents now think it’s a disservice to their health, and by extension, their families, to smoke at all, or even risk the guilt of watching their kids take up smoking in their teens.

ny1New Yorkers
new to Paris are also regularly startled to find that: Parisians do not walk around in gym clothes or sweatpants unless they are actually exercising. ny2

Parisians do not talk to strangers. This can be profoundly disconcerting to a New Yorker who’s used to freely bitching about life’s daily indignities with whoever happens to be in line with them at Duane Reade. If you comment to a Parisian in the métro that the un-air-conditioned car is particularly smelly today, they will give you a frightened look like you are a crazy person and turn away. ny1

Meanwhile, Parisians new to New York are often aghast that:

New Yorkers are so plump. This may come as a surprise to New Yorkers proud that they are among America’s thinnest, but on the whole, New Yorkers are heavier than Parisians. Part of this is a certain pride in body diversity in New York that doesn’t exist in Paris, where a good friend will quickly tell you if you look like you’ve gained five pounds.

New Yorkers carry around their coffee. In Paris, the very point of coffee is that you sit down and take a break. You don’t walk around with a giant vat, fueling yourself throughout the day. Parisians find this amusing and horrifying, as they do the fact that everything in America, even baby strollers, comes equipped with a huge cupholder.

New York parents talk to their kids as though they are their peers. “Jonah, did you think last night’s Arcade Fire show was as good as last year’s?” is not something you will ever hear a Parisian parent say to his or her 6-year-old.

New Yorkers are hyperfriendly up front and then forget about you later (unless they need you). In Paris, people are quite cold at first sight and don’t see the point in making particular efforts with strangers,” explains Anna Polonsky, U.S. director for the French food blog Le Fooding, which has become synonymous in France with global foodie culture.  “However,” she continues, “as soon as you get past that, they’ll immediately invite you home for dinner or take you to their favorite bar for apéro. New Yorkers are the opposite. They’re extremely warm at first and will call you honey, boo, or my dear in less than a second, but it takes years to actually become intimate with them. That cultural gap is very tough for a lot of Frenchies.
ny3 They feel at first like they’re in heaven compared to Paris, only to be let down and find out that they won’t be contacted until they’re worth the interest, or if they have cool things to offer at night.”

And that, in a nutshell lies some of the key differences between New Yorkers and Parisians.  What do you think?

I want to be rich and I want lots of money

I don’t care about clever, I don’t care about funny

I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds

I heard people die while they’re trying to find them

And I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless

Cause everyone knows that’s how you get famous.

Allen in concert
Allen in concert

I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror

I’m on the right track, yeah I’m on to a winner.

I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore

And I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore

And when do you think it will all become clear?

Cause I’m being taken over by The Fear

Life’s about film stars and less about mothers

It’s all about fast cars and cussing each other

But it doesn’t matter cause I’m packing plastic

And that’s what makes my life so fucking fantastic

And I am a weapon of massive consumption

And it’s not my fault, it’s how I’m programmed to function

Forget about guns and forget ammunition

Cause I’m killing them all on my own little mission

Now I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner

Now everything’s cool as long as I’m getting thinner
